L’Orange – The Ordinary Man [Album Stream]

As promised, L’Orange drops off his new album, “The Ordinary Man”. On his third album, L’Orange builds upon his previous catalogue’s cinematic film noir and cabaret jazz fixations, but adds a thematic focus, whimsy, and feverish urgency. It arrives after a tumultuous two-year saga in which a series of tumors grew in L’Orange’s right ear, which eventually led to almost total deafness on that side. Surgeries left him off-balance and dizzy. A natural fear gripped him, causing self-doubt about whether he’d regain the totality of his gift. But as it does quite often, turmoil spurred the producer to create his most poignant body of work. Released on Mello Music Group, The Ordinary Man chronicles the narrative of a magician who discovered late in life that his peers weren’t actually pulling rabbits from hats. Crestfallen and disillusioned, he digs deeper to push his own show into uncharted territory, demonstrating ostensibly impossible feats for crowds too terrified to ask for the reveal. L’Orange feat. Blu & Elzhi – The Difference [Audio x Download]

L’Orange teams up with Blu and Elzhi on “The Difference” from his upcoming LP, “The Ordinary Man”. “The Ordinary Man” is the third solo album from producer L’Orange. Known for his early 20th century inspired style and stripped down jazz influence, L’Orange’s solo work is often very personal and intimate and the new album is no different. Although mostly instrumental, there are vocal features from underground legends like Del The Funky Homosapien, Blu, Elzhi and Oddisee, as well as up and coming artists like Koreatown Oddity, Chuuwee & Solemn Brigham. These features cement the narrative of the album, tying together a long form story. Conceptually, the album follows a magician from being an unknown to the biggest star in the world. Performing impossible feats for thousands of people, the magician eventually becomes disillusioned and bitter, blaming the world for not understanding his greatness. Although dark in tone, the album is reliably playful and absurd, taking a shadowy story and combining it with the most polished production we’ve ever seen from L’Orange. Stream/download “The Difference” below and pre-order the album here, before it drops on October 27th. The Ordinary Man by L'Orange

L’Orange feat. Oddisee – Look Around [Audio x Download]

After a trying battle with hearing loss and a number of surgeries, producer L’Orange preps his new album “The Ordinary Man” (out October 27th on Mello Music Group), a concept album about a superstar magician disillusioned with the world that made his greatness. Now fully deaf in one ear, this album marks a shift and growth for L’Orange towards an even tighter and developed sound while maintaining his sample-heavy knack for finding the essence of his influences in every beat. The first single from the album is a landmark collaboration for Mello Music Group, combining for the first time two of the most prolific and talented artists on the roster: L’Orange & Oddisee. The new song, “Look Around (feat. Oddisee)” is a perfect marriage of styles. Musically, it’s an adventurous exploration of traditional and unorthodox approaches. L’Orange & Mr. Lif – The Gentle End [Video]

Alone in the evening, in public spaces, the mind wanders. Twilight dreams flicker through the mind’s eye and overlap our quotidian commutes. Director Jon Webb’s dance of light plays seamlessly over Nashville based producer L’Orange’s subdued spaghetti western whistling, dry-drum driven soundscape. The lead-laced, pumice toned voice of veteran vocalist Mr. Lif ambles deftly through the track like the lone survivor of a world well over the excitement of an end that has long since passed. The final video from the duo’s recent album “The Life & Death of Scenery” (Mello Music Group & Adult Swim) brings color and lighting choices that call to mind something Gasper Noe might have shot if on location in LA. The otherworldly feel is highlighted by actress Xinyi Zhu who dreams with eyes open while lost somewhere in time wearing a dookie gold chain, thin rimmed full moon spectacles, and high hipped denim shorts. The video is a magical ode to the quiet escapism headphones offer.
