DJ Yella: “I Haven’t Worked On Music With Dr. Dre Since 1991” [Video]

In this exclusive interview with VladTV, DJ Yella opens up about producing some of N.W.A.’s most memorable records and his return to the music business after his stint in the adult film industry. Yella touched on working with Ice Cube after the disbandment of N.W.A., but insists tracks like “Hello” and “Chin Check” aren’t official N.W.A tracks, but songs by Cube. When it comes to an official N.W.A reunion, the producer says, “You never know what’s going to happen.” The producer also mentions he and Dr. Dre hadn’t worked on music since 1991. During their collaborative time, he says he helped make most of the beats which has helped him live a comfortable lifestyle today. He was also offered the chance to tour with Dre for the “Up and Smoke” Tour in 2000, but was content with his lucrative work in the adult film industry. During his time in the adult film world, he produced and edited up to 300 films. Yella says he enjoyed the work, but has returned to his first love-DJ’ing. Check out more of what Yella has to say about disliking fame and more in the interview above.

DJ Yella Discusses Being The Only N.W.A. Member @ Eazy-E’s Funeral [Video]

DJ Yella recently spoke to VladTV about the last interaction he had with Eazy-E right before the legendary emcee succumbed to complications from AIDS. The founding member of NWA told us he spoke with Eazy during an adult film he was shooting at the “Eazy-Duz-It” emcee’s home. Yella then revealed that Eazy told him to “watch yourself” before it was announced that he had AIDS, which the producer later realized was the rapper’s way of telling him about his illness. After revealing his passion to do music died when Eazy passed away, Yella addressed being the only NWA member to attend his funeral. He explained that the members will never discuss why they didn’t go to the funeral, but he guessed “some people probably just can’t take it.” Check out more of what DJ Yella had to say in the above clip.

DJ Yella: “Eazy-E Wasn’t A Natural Rapper, He Had To Be Coached” [Video]

DJ Yella sat down with VladTV and discussed how Eazy E’s break out single “Boyz-n-the-Hood” evolved after East Coast group HBO turned down the song. The famed producer revealed that despite Ice Cube being a rapper and writing the track, Dr. Dre wanted Eazy, who was never a rapper, to perform the song. Yella explained that no one in the group ever asked why Cube didn’t do the song, which went on to be a major success. During the sit-down DJ Yella also spoke about Jerry Heller helping them get a deal with Priority Records, why he wasn’t on the “N.W.A. and the Posse” album cover, and more which you can hear about in the above clip.

DJ Yella Weighs In On Drama Between Dr. Dre & Dee Barnes [Video]

NWA founding member DJ Yella recently sat down with VladTV and spoke about the drama surrounding Ice Cube leaving the group, plus the alleged assault of TV host and journalist Dee Barnes by Dr. Dre. “It just happened. You know, he left,” the Compton native said of Cube leaving NWA due to a contract dispute with group manager Jerry Heller. “It wasn’t no, talkin’ no mess, it wasn’t nothin’ like that, it was just like, he went his way.” Moving on, Yella spoke on the alleged incident between Dr. Dre and Dee Barnes, who hosted a TV show called Pump It Up! which aired an episode many felt portrayed NWA in a bad light. “I guess she let [Ice Cube] say something, but they edited right before our part,” he explained. Asked if Ice Cube took the first shot, Yella said that “it was made to look like the first shot.” The conversation then turned to the incident between Dre and Dee Barnes, where he allegedly beat her up and attempted to throw her down some stairs at a club. Check out what DJ Yella had to say about the incident above.

Kendrick Lamar Interviews N.W.A For Billboard [Video]

When Kendrick Lamar arrives this Friday evening at a cavernous photo studio in the flatlands of industrial Hollywood, he’s 30 minutes early. And the occasion has been nearly 25 years in the making: Lamar, 28, is here to interview the four living members of N.W.A for their first magazine cover together since Ice Cube went solo in 1991 and the group collapsed into a famously bitter feud. Eazy-E died in 1995, at 31. But today, Lamar meets with four men who defined his hometown of Compton, Calif., as a cradle of politically engaged, uncompromisingly hardcore hip-hop. With a modest demeanor that suggests nothing of his status as rap’s leading visionary and an entourage numbering just two associates and a publicist, he seems genuinely humbled to be here. When the group arrives, he is quick to pay his respects: first to Dr. Dre, then Ice Cube, then DJ Yella and MC Ren. They all share warm smiles and hugs.
