Today, DJ Spinna joined us and blessed us with some incredible stories with some undeniable legends. Not only does he curate Spike Lee’s annual “Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson” block party, but he’s worked with heavy hitters like De La Soul, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder and more. As soon as we heard Stevie Wonder’s name — we had to know more. Like, how was he in-studio? Spinna details it all, saying he was in awe watching Mr. Wonder play the keys and bringing the internal vision of the music to life. Spinna is also internationally known for his insane parties. “The Wonderful Party,” which was an ode to Stevie Wonder himself and the “Soul Slam Party,” a battle of sorts between Michael Jackson and Prince’s music. The Pharcyde – LabcabinCalifornia 20yr Anniversary (Mixed By DJ Spinna) [Mixtape]

The Pharcyde is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their iconic album Labcabincalifornia by releasing a commemorative mixtape. In a collaborative effort, the #BeamMeUpSpinna mixtape is mixed by NYC’s DJ Spinna and features “Nasty Habits”, an unreleased joint from the vault that features Ralph Tresvant & Bobby Brown. We also asked a group of producers to remix and add their own personal spin on a few of the Labcabincalifornia songs that you all know and love. Dj Mike Relm re-works a mash up of “Drop”, SBBX remixes “Groupie Therapy”, Moka Only drops his version of “Y”, Ta R’aach teams up with Bootie Brown to co-produce “Devil Music, The Devils Kitchen Remix”, and The Pharcyde’s own Bootie Brown remixes “Runnin’.” DJ SPINNA is a heavily touted presence in the international soulful house music scene. He is known for his vast accomplishments as a producer, is celebrated for his “Soul Slam” events and Stevie Wonder inspired WONDER-Full Dj performances and subsequent collaborations. The Pharcyde’s sophomore album “LabcabinCalifornia” was originally released on November 14th, 1995. The group enlisted a young and then unknown James Yancey aka J DILLA to produce beats, like the cult classic “Runnin.” They also collaborated with director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” “Adaptation”) on the video for “Drop.” Labcabincalifornia has consistently and continues to reinforce their steadfast refusal to tread familiar artistic grounds.

Bling47 Breaks Dilla Edition: Little Brother – DJ Spinna [Video]

Bling47 Breaks takes you on a journey into samples used by J Dilla. Filmed, edited, animated and directed by Waajeed. This episode takes us to “Do or Die” Bedstuy Brooklyn, NY with native DJ Spinna. I spoke with him for several months to try to coordinate schedules for filming. Finally, we made it happen on one of the coldest days in the history books. We filmed in his “Thingamjig” studio where we talked about Dilla and his influence on NY producers. Spinna opened the books, especially when he pulled out his MPC 3000 and showed me how he did his rendition of Dilla and Black Stars, “Little Brother.” Only here at bling47 do you get this type of access. Check it. Jeedo Previously: Sonnymoon – Houstatlantavegas (Waajeed Remix) [Audio]
