Read moreStepbrothers Alchemist and Evidence share their thoughts on how Kendrick Lamar and the TDE crew are bringing West Coast hip-hop back on top. Alchemist feels that there are “so many layers” in L.A. due to there being so many different crews, but believes that overall, “the West is crushing sh*t right now.” Alchemist also explains a photo that was taken of him and Kendrick in the studio, revealing that the photo was from a while back. He also speaks about chopping it up with the “Swimming Pools” rapper while they were on tour with Eminem and recalls that they spoke about working together in the future.
Read moreNas was honored at last night’s VIBE Impact Awards, with several of his friends and colleagues roasting him with speeches. The ‘Illmatic’ rapper’s contribution to hip-hop is immeasurable. “We didn’t want the VIBE Impact Awards to be a lifetime achievement award. We want to honor someone who has made a lasting contribution to hip-hop and will continue to do so in the future,” said editor-in-chief Jermaine Hall, before introducing Nas’ former A&R exec Kate Newman. During the night, Swizz Beatz would take the stand and admit he named his son — Prince Nasir Dean — after him. J. Cole would deliver a comical flashback to his childhood when he discovered Nas for the first time while being a die-hard Tupac fan. Former VIBE editor Erik Parker also took the podium to discuss Nas’ influence and how rather than passing a torch to young rappers, he ignites it. No ID would comment on how Nas brings out the best in him, while Nas’ former manager Steve Stoute also took to the stand to say some words. More footage after the jump.

Read moreAmerigo Gazaway’s new *Soul Mates* series continues the theme of his previous work in creating collaborations that never were. On the series’ first installment, the producer unites Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey (Formerly Mos Def) and soul legend Marvin Gaye for a dream collaboration aptly titled “Yasiin Gaye”. Building the album’s foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye’s Motown classics, Gazaway re-orchestrates the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework. Carefully weaving Bey’s dense raps and Gaye’ soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality far closer to Gaye’s famous duets than that of a “mashup” album. Read moreWhile other emcees are satisfied with the title of “rapper,” Archie Bang has higher dreams and and ambitions that cannot be satisfied by a six letter catch all term. Over some well orchestrated piano production supplied by 12 Keyz, the Brooklyn rhymesayer reveals his affinity for the ladies on “Hey Luv” (Remix). With fellow Brooklynite Troy Ave on board, the track is a refreshing change of pace from the endless swag rap clogging the streets. Whereas the original appeared on Troy’s ‘BSB Vol 2.’, this version will be exclusively featured on Bang’s upcoming Never Say Die Vol.1 (80’s Babies) which is set to drop this Tuesday, February 4th, which gives you plenty of time to share this with your own Luv before Valentine’s Day.
