Ugly Heroes (Apollo Brown, Verbal Kent, Red Pill) – Me [Audio x Download]

The introspective track asks, “Who’s keeping me from the top? It’s Me. What keeps me punching the clock? It’s Me… In the end I have to face Me.” Ugly Heroes continues to connect with listeners through their self-titled debut album. As they begin booking their fall and winter tour schedule, Apollo Brown and company wanted to drop one of their non-album bonus cuts. Red Pill & Verbal Kent both deliver heartfelt vocal performances, while Apollo Brown dips into his experimental toolkit with 808’s and stuttering double time hi-hats. Ugly Heroes – Desperate [Video]

Track #2 from the “Ugly Heroes” album gets the visual treatment. An Ugly Hero is considered a myth. Growing up, the heroes we saw in cartoons and movies were perfectly chiseled, intelligent, and had senses none of us possess. An UGLY HERO is the everyday blue collar individual that makes the world go ’round. These are the heroes that work all day, everyday to ensure that the lives around them are taken care of, and do it all without recognition. They wear themselves into the ground and sacrifice vanity for family. Somewhere between poverty and fame – is the rest of us: Ugly Heroes. Apollo Brown, Verbal Kent, and Red Pill are UGLY HEROES. Ugly Heroes feat. DJ Eclipse – Ugly [Audio x Download]

Detroit’s most consistent producer, Apollo Brown, comes through with his trademark sound – brassy horn chops, vinyl crackle, and layered drums that knock just right. Definitely turn this one up and let Apollo’s production bump at it’s head-nodding, face scrunching best. Red Pill jumps out first with a quick shout to Mello for making the deal on this record: “It ain’t a major deal yet, but it ain’t minor shit / got the industry by the throat with an iron grip.” By :53 seconds in Pill puts a sock in all those armchair comment box reviewers mouths with a display of lyrical wordplay that I’ll leave you to unravel on the repeated rewind. After the verse, DJ Eclipse lays a gorgeous scratch hook, reminding people Ugly Heroes is Ugly as ever. The second verse finds Chicago veteran Verbal Kent choking listeners out with their livestrong bracelets. Verbal proves he’s a bad dude like Erykah… knocking your wheaties bowl offa the table, liftin you up and literally throwin’ you offa the label. Then at 2:16 Mr. Kent decides to jump it up a notch and match Pills tongue twisting throw down with another display that leaves your pause button worn. Before it’s over Apollo masterfully brings it back to a sit down soul stirring conversational tone. Ugly Heroes by Ugly Heroes (Apollo Brown, Verbal Kent, Red Pill)

Ugly Heroes – Hero’s Theme [Audio x Download]

Apollo Brown, Verbal Kent and Red Pill are Ugly Heroes. Album out now! The origins of Ugly Heores stems from Apollo Brown wanting to do a heavy blue collar album that paints a real picture of life out there. Not a gangsta record. Not a hipster record. A record that paints life as it is today for a lot of the working poor. And as much as we all want to act like we aren’t the working poor – truth is, most of us are living check to check with moments of glory intersparsed with notices from electric companies that the disconnect is pending. Emcees Red Pill (Detroit) and Verbal Kent (Chicago) lay some of the rawest slice of life narratives in the game today over 15 tracks produced by Apollo Brown. Think soul drenched beats with moody horns and heavy drums. We all listen to these rags to riches stories most people sell us, but this is that rags and still hoping story. The album is Ugly Heroes.
