Tree – Trap Genius [Album]

The highly-anticipated project has been ceaselessly teased over the last month and a half with a seemingly neverending list of singles and videos and today steps out to the world with Noisey. Alongside the project release is the premiere of his latest video for the lead single off the project, “Don’t Een Kare” and a write up from Ernest Wilkins who talked with Tree one-on-one about the creation of an album that pulls from the artist’s experiences growing up in Chicago’s vaunted Cabrini-Green Projects and the life that followed after they were demolished. Utilizing his raspy, pained vocals Tree takes listeners to his part of town, demonstrating the ways he was able to escape his circumstances when many didn’t, hence the name ‘TrapGenius’.

Tree – Milk Chin [Video]

Off of Tree’s upcoming “Trap Genius” project. If you’ve met Tree or caught him in a video somewhere on the internet you’re probably familiar with the distinctive patch of pale skin just below his lower lip. As a kid growing up in Chicago the birthmark was a cause of anger and insecurity as he was picked on for the off-set spot on his face. At this point though, grown and matured, Tree sees the mark that used to bring him angst as a source of pride and flexes appropriately here in his latest video for the aptly-titled “Milk Chin”. As Tree puts it himself “I got my money up and I’m able to embrace what I once thought was a hindrance. Now, at 30, I can make a song and video focused on my birth mark.”

Tree & Chris Crack – Tree + Crack [Free EP]

Chicago’s MC Tree has had one hell of a year, releasing a slew of Soul Trap-themed collaborations throughout 2014 alongside his own solo projects, he has established himself as the sort of Godfather of Chicago’s burgeoning hip-hop scene. He returns today with a re-hashing of his work with fellow Chicago MC, Chris Crack. Having teamed up earlier this year with the New Deal Crew artist for a resounding hit in TreeSwag, which has found itself on year-end lists, the duo returns on Christmas Eve with a tightly packaged, five song EP to tie folks over through the holidays. Once again a furtherance of the patented ‘Soul Trap’ sound that Tree established with his Sunday School series.

Brian Fresco & Tree – SoulMoney [EP]

The collaborative project from SAVEMONEY’s Brian Fresco and fellow Chicagoan MC Tree, SoulMoney is here via the good folks over at Noisey, who handled the premiere. The project perfectly combines Fresco’s off-kilter, angular flow with the frenetic chopped soul samples and funky original production from one of Chicago’s most talented beat makers and artists to boot. Soul Money has benefitted thus far from a solid buzz and the first listen certainly won’t disappoint. Check the project out at the link above and browse through the releases of singles “Rose”, “On My Soul” and “Bae”.
