Tonio Sagan – Voyager Records: Stranger Than Fiction [Audio]

Massachusetts producer Tonio Sagan returns with another incredible installment to his “Voyager Records” series, this time drifting even deeper into outer space on the haunting “Stranger Than Fiction.” The nearly five-minute track is a hypnotizing mini-epic that, like preceding cut “Voyager Records: Greetings,” is built on sounds curated by his grandfather, Carl Sagan. The late, great astronomer created a soundbank that traveled into space with the Voyager 1 & 2 shuttles in the 1970s, just in case the starships made contact with alien life. Where “Stranger Than Fiction” differs, however, is in its more Hip-Hop-indebted sound, which pays homage to Tonio’s earlier years as a producer. There’s still an intergalactic wave to the track—those synthesizers are superbly science fiction—but it’s grounded by its Boom bap tempo and sample choices. Those include touches from “Melancholy Blues” by Louis Armstrong and His Hot Seven, in addition to the first movement (“Allegro Con Brio”) from Beethoven’s Symphony Number 5 in C Minor. “Voyager Records: Stranger Than Fiction” is now available through all major digital retailers and streaming platforms, and can be purchased on limited edition 7-inch gold vinyl, along with the A-Side, “Greetings” which first hit SoundCloud in late September.

Tonio Sagan – Voyager Records: Greetings [Audio]

Running is faster than walking, driving faster than biking, and interstellar spacecraft faster then cars and planes. Blasting away from our little yellow star at over 38,000 miles per hour, Voyager 1, with its planetary sample of human music, its interstellar mix and mashup, is, at eleven miles a second, moving away from our sun faster than any other spacecraft known to man. Voyager 2 lags behind—only a couple of light minutes—actually a considerable amount, since that’s about 25 times the distance from the Earth to the sun! Probably unheard yet in space, the Voyager record is gold-plated copper. Voyager 1, launched in 1977, is the farthest human-made object from Earth. A very pure sample of the isotope uranium-238 is electroplated upon the LP’s cover. The thought is that aliens, perhaps far in the future, may be able to use the half-life of that isotope, which is 4.468 billion years, to figure out how long ago lived the organisms that sent it. Coordinated with neurotransmitters and ion flows, the electrochemical impulses scientists link to thought (such as you reading this) travel at the rather staid rate of 20-30 meters per second. But even the fastest neural impulses, which can reach 200 miles per hour, travel three million times slower than the speed of electricity through a wire. That’s almost (up to 90 percent) the speed of light. It seems incredible, then, that this physical basis of thought, itself way slower than electricity, loses—as does light itself—in a race with the

Tonio Sagan x ILLmaculate – Murderas [Audio x Download]

“Murderas” is the hypnotizing, gripping new single from Massachusetts producer Tonio Sagan (grandson of the late, great Carl Sagan), who blends bass-fueled Hip-Hop and smoky atmospherics alongside the slick rhymes of battle-rap legend Illmaculate (of Only & Ill, Sandpeople). The Portland-hailing rapper kills it lyrically and vocally, spitting tack-sharp wordplay throughout verses that shift from one flow to the next. His ambidextrous delivery is key here, as Sagan builds his instrumental beneath his collaborator’s rhymes. It makes for a track that’s equal parts hyphy and Old West, with a touch of the producer’s affinity for dub. DJ N.E.B. (of Political Animals) deserves ample credit for that, as he deftly scratches in vocals from Sagan’s previous single with Warrior King, “Frenemies”, on the hook. That sample is boosted by Gambia-based singer Shanti Starr, whose vocals add a slightly haunting layer, and the smooth guitar work of Hugh Currier. Altogether, “Murderas” proves that you damn well better be following Sagan’s career; dude’s only getting better with each track he drops. “Murderas” which features vividly illustrated artwork courtesy of Sp(Lit), is now available for streaming.

Tonio Sagan & Gems Geneva feat. Warrior King – Frenemies [Audio x Download]

Tonio Sagan and Gems Geneva join forces with Warrior King on “Frenemies”. With the temperatures rising across the country and spring in full effect, the timing couldn’t be better for the warmth and sharpness of “Frenemies,” the new single from frequent collaborators Tonio Sagan and Gems Geneva. The hypnotic dancehall cut also features guest vocals from reggae mainstay Warrior King, who melodically outlines those “pretendin’ friends” everyone’s had in their lives at some point. Not all frenemies are made equal, though, as King sings that “some sell their friends out for silver and gold.” Others, however, have far worse intentions, though you can’t let those “bloodsuckas” shake your faith. The aforementioned warmth of “Frenemies” resides in the instrumental crafted by Sagan and fellow Massachusetts-based producers Gems Geneva. Together, they bring an authentic canvas for King, who hails from Clarendon, Jamaica. Not only that, but they’re further showcasing their ability to build such soundscapes, something Sagan really drove home with his epic single, “Stuff Dreams Are Made Of.”

Tonio Sagan – Stuff Dreams Are Made Of [Audio x Download]

Massachusetts-based producer Tonio Sagan bursts onto the scene with a sprawling mashup-meets-cinematic opus, “Stuff Dreams Are Made Of.” Tonio begins the mix by sampling renowned astronomer Carl Sagan. Those words lead us through a soundscape of ethereal cloud beats and Hip Hop-influenced bass music, which is paired with wall-to-wall conceptually driven sampling. “Stuff Dreams Are Made Of” is one of the most carefully crafted pieces of its kind, in part because its emotional weight. The track features live bass by Garrett Sawyer and drums by Demse Zullo during the section with Nas and Aerosmith samples. The drum recording is from the first and tragically last show Demse performed in a project with DJ Neb and Tonio. Zullo passed away with his good friend Budzy in a tragic automobile accident shortly after. It’s a beautiful tribute not only to Zullo but all the important lives we’ve lost over the years. This is Tonio Sagan’s opening statement. Stay tuned. His debut EP, “Cloud Control Vol. 1”, is set to drop this March via Wakaan, the new label from Dubstep virtuoso, Liquid Stranger. “Stuff Dreams Are Made Of,” is now available for free download.
