Freddie Gibbs & Madlib feat. Karriem Riggins – City [Audio]

Gary, Indiana, rapper Freddie Gibbs and Southern California MC Madlib might seem like a weird pairing, but the rugged MC and offbeat producer and rapper have collaborated for years, releasing two EPs together and combining Gibbs’ raw street sense and gifted technical abilities with Madlib’s quirky, adventurous production. They’re currently putting the finishing touches on their collaborative album Piñata, expected later this year, and in the meantime, they’re putting out their track “City” featuring Karriem Riggins as part of Adult Swim’s Summer Singles series. via Rolling Stone

Madlib – The Mad March [Audio]

Madlib last visited San Francisco in December 2011 to debut his collaboration with Freddie Gibbs. For his return to the Bay Area, he’s put together an evening focusing on one of his favorite musical scenes from the lost but not forgotten past: the Southern African nation of Zambia’s vibrant 70s rock scene. This is the Sound of Zamrock. Madlib has championed Zamrock’s heroes on his Beat Konducta in Africa (sampling from the likes of WITCH and Paul Ngozi); his DJ sets feature rarities from the scene; he and the rapper formerly known as Mos Def have been discussing a trip to Zambia to record a collaborative album. At this special Madlib Medicine Show, Madlib will put together a DJ set that weaves his trademark hip-hop beats with Zamrock classics. He’s also brought WITCH’s last remaining member, bandleader Emmanuel “Jagari” Chanda from Zambia to San Francisco to perform Zamrock Live for the first time to a public audience in North America. Rounding out the bill is Now-Again Records’ Egon, Madlib’s partner in Madlib Invazion, and the man behind the resurgence of interest in the Zamrock movement. As the label ramps up its undertakings to document the lost gems from this isolated yet genius movement in 2013, they partnered up with Urban Outfitters to bring a Zamrock collection into the chain this spring. via

Quasimoto (Madlib) – Planned Attack [Audio]

Quasimoto first came to life on Madlib’s personal beat tapes in the producer’s early years in Oxnard CA – private music, not meant for release, made for himself and a small circle of local smokers and their car stereos. By the time of Quasimoto’s debut The Unseen, most had caught on to the fact that Madlib and Quasimoto were one in the same. The MC as artistic alter ego, like a talking dummy from surreal rap vaudeville. Quasimoto is usually the “bad character,” doing and saying what the producer doesn’t, with Madlib along side as a noncommittal collaborator. The Unseen (Stones Throw, 2000) was among the new decade’s first sleeper hits, ranking on Spin’s year end list at a time when the producer and label were unknown outside hip-hop DJ circles. After a subsequent journey through jazz production and now-legendary collaborations with MF DOOM & J Dilla, Madlib called on Quasimoto again for The Further Adventures of Lord Quas. The album played something like a smoked-out comedy/crime Blaxploitation flick, and continued to build Madlib’s reputation as one of the most creative and fearlessly skewed creators in hip-hop.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib feat. BJ The Chicago Kid – Shame [Audio]

From the “Shame” EP. Freddie Gibbs & Madlib’s Shame EP follows where Thuggin’ left off: with Gibbs effectively spooling street stories onto the Beat Konducta’s wax. “Shame” featuring singer B.J. The Chicago Kid, is Gibbs’ honest appraisal of a one night stand; “Terrorist” is all killer, no filler – a short, terrifying rap offset by a cheeky fusion jazz sample. The Shame EP also contains vocals, instrumentals and two bonus beats. The duo’s as-of-yet untitled album is planned for release in the third quarter 2012.

Georgia Anne Muldrow Talks The Madlib Produced “Seeds” [Video]

After a bit of a hiatus, Out Da Box TV returns with one of our strongest interviews yet featuring the amazing producer/vocalist “Georgia Anne Muldrow”. In this episode which is actually Part 1 of a truly in-depth 2 Part series, GAM takes the time to speak affectionately on the importance of the “Seeds/ Children” today. Now this was not constructed to be a typical music interview, I specifically conducted it from an angle that would create dialogue about some of the realer issues affecting our children today, and since Georgia’s music often expresses concern and care for the youth, I felt it fitting to have this kind of discussion with her. In the interview Georgia speaks affectionately on a number of topics including why she chose to speak about The Seeds on her new album, how we can better prepare our children for a successful future, and how to reach our youth who are often vocal in schools and standout from the box that society generally tries to place them in. There’s so much in this interview to absorb, that I don’t think my description can do it the justice it deserves. Please take the time to watch Part 1 of our truly in-depth follow up interview with Georgia Anne Muldrow and be sure to check for Part 2 next week, which will be just as insightful for you to view. We hope you are inspired!
