The Stretch & Bobbito Show w/ DJ Riz, Eclipse, Fat Joe & Big Pun 89.9 WKCR (August 31, 1995) [Audio]

“I always recorded my guest sets on KCR so I couldn’t for the life of me understand why I wouldn’t have the one Riz and I did when Fat Joe brought up Big Pun for the first time (along w/Armageddon & Keith Nut). Come to find out I forgot to label the tapes with the date. Anyway, seems only fitting to post this today on Pun’s birthday. Joe starts the interview (151:40) and plays some joints off his album before introducing everyone to the mic (167:42). I threw on “Broken Language” and Pun set it all off. Other dope moments were the Pumpkinhead, Natural Elements and O.C./Poops promos that Bob started off the night with before Riz got on (10:20) and showed off (see Nas Remix). Bobbito plays a demo set in the middle of the show (113:15) before Terror Squad arrives and then I close it out (179:22). And what would a Stretch & Bobbito show be without comedy from Lord Sear (228:30) For more insight on this Pun appearance check out the movie “Stretch & Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives”.” – DJ Eclipse

4 Turntables w/ DJ Eclipse, DJ Evil Dee, DJ JS-1 & DJ DV One [Video]

After the Rock Steady Anniversary show in Central Park, DJ Eclipse brought some talented DJs to RIOC for a fun medley of breaks and cuts. With four turntables set up in the studio, pairs of two were formed where one DJ would spin breaks for an entire music set and the other DJ would provide cuts as overlays. This turned into a great session of improv DJing. The first group was DJ Evil Dee on the breaks and DJ Eclipse on the cuts, followed by DJ JS-1 on the breaks and DJ DV One on the cuts. Check it out!

DJ Rob Swift & DJ Eclipse Discuss The New Generation Of DJs Using Serato [Video]

Two long-time DJs who have mastered the art of turntablism decades before software came into the picture had an important discussion on the skill level of the new generation of DJs. Both agree that the skill level of turntablism has not surpassed the peak of the 90s when many DJ crews competed and battled to be the best and most technically-skilled at the art form. Rob Swift teaches courses on DJing and believes that technology has allowed the younger generation to take shortcuts. DJs from the 80s and 90s had to be delicate with vinyl records to prevent the needle from skipping as well as command the turntables. These are basic instincts that one can only learn from practicing with vinyl and not relying on a laptop to come to the rescue. Rob explains “Sometimes the beauty in the art form is the mistakes” and “The people I teach, I want them to be better than me, so that I can learn from them.” Check out DJRobSwift.com for updates on Rob’s upcoming album, “X-Files: Lost & Deleted”.
