Ypsilanti’s golden child, 14KT, makes the progression from instrumentals to full-fledged songs on the EP A Friendly (Vocal) Game of KT. The original project was rife with earth quaking bass lines, precise drums and heavenly synths. The vocal version pairs select beats with equally select MC’s to tease a great instrumental into a classic song. MMG all-star Oddisee and his soul singin’ comrade Olivier Daysoul lace the murderous drums and guitar sample of “One 4 Black,” turning it into “High Horse.” New York rhyme wizard Skyzoo and the amorphous The Black Opera are also on board to lend their vocal expertise. Though the short project is stacked with indie rap heavyweights, one of the brightest spots on the album is when KT picks up the mic for the all-new “AsWeContinue.” The introspective track finds KT pouring his soul out in rhyme, opening up about a tumultuous 2011 that left our shining star depressed and the faith that led him out of that. A producer’s natural evolution is to work with vocalist and A Friendly (Vocal) Game of KT is Kendall Tucker’s next step in his progression as a great producer of hip-hop music. After releasing the instrumental project “A Friendly Game of KT“, we decided instead of just letting the fans have all the fun rhyming over KT’s lush soundscapes we’d let some of our MMG affiliates take the tracks for a test spin. We ended up creating an entire EP of vocal versions including a special track in which KT himself delivers the rhymes. This is the first creation from the upcoming 4 track EP, a song originally titled “One 4 Black”, which rhyming adept Oddisee re-envisioned with a little help on the hook from the mellifluous Olivier Daysoul. Michigan producer 14KT dropped his newest instrumental album on CD & Vinyl today: “A Friendly Game of KT”. PreFix Mag helped debut the first video from the project for the intensly personal track “Width (feat. Tony Ozier)”. The video was made by KT himself and features home movie footage of family and friends that help connect the songs message to listeners “2011. This is a personal piece I wanted to share with you all. I made it from compiled videos I recorded on my phone. I made the song dedicated to God, but it’s also a dedication to my family and some of the friends He’s blessed me with. As an artist, you can easily get caught up in an endless menu of distractions in life. Having to please people, facing criticism on your creativity, pressures of living up to your potential, pleasing others, image, all the things that can create fear in our lives. I thought about back in 05′ when me and Boog used to hit up this spot called “The Firefly” for a night called “Elevation”. We were always freestyling by the piano in the corner. I already knew she was a jewel with the poetry, but this was the early beginnings of me being exposed to her rhyme skills. Not to long afterwards she would come through my studio to record songs. Fast forward to now, she’s established herself as viable, beautiful, prolific, and a powerful lyricist with an ILL voice as a weapon. When I was in the lab, I just wanted to compliment her voice and create a beat that had the classic feeling that the lyrics gave me. Simple, yet optimistic type vibe ya dig?
