Tyla has made a significant impact on the music scene ever since her track “Water” began to gain traction.

The South African artist has been upfront about her musical vision. “I knew I wanted my sound to be a mixture of pop, R&B, Afrobeats, amapiano”, she explained to Time magazine last year. Having announced her debut album several months ago, she made it available for pre-order well in advance to ensure proper buildup.

The music video for “Water”, which garnered nearly 150 million views within a few months, sparked the #TylaWaterChallenge. Tyla clarified that the moves that garnered attention online are actually a dance style in South Africa, not twerking as some may have assumed.
