Buddy Talks Childhood, Church, Finding Voice, Pharrell, Kendrick, Shine & More [Video]

Hard Knock TV’s Nick Huff Barili sits down with Buddy for in-depth interview at Truth Studios. In part 1, Buddy and Nick talk about his childhood, growing up in Compton and how being involved in the Amazing Grace Conservatory and Church influenced him. Buddy goes on to talk about meeting Music Supervisor Scott Vener, who introduced him to Pharrell, who signed him on the spot. Buddy describes that period of time when he was working with Pharrell, putting out his first single “Awesome, Awesome” and how working with a lot of big artists like Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, etc made it hard to develop his own sound because a lot of the tracks he was putting out where featuring other artists. Buddy describes the day he met Kendrick Lamar, when all of TDE rolled up to Pharrell’s studio. Staircases, one of our favorite tracks on the Idle Time project was born out of that session. Buddy shares that moving closer to the beach and how his lifestyle changed inspired his project with Kaytranada Ocean and Montana. Around that time he also dropped his break out song Shine, which Buddy says is about “how good everything is through out adversity, aint nothing ever going to be perfect, that would be a lie. Everything is cool. At the time I was doing exactly I wanted to be doing. I had amazing beats, working with cool producers, my friends. I was just in a good place with myself and the world. And i knew all the problems and issues that i had in my life but it wasn’t that big of a deal when i was recording the song.”
