brandUn DeShay – Had Em All [Video]

“I grew up admiring guys like Pharrell, Cudi, Kanye.. dudes who weren’t afraid to be themselves and more importantly, speak for the unspoken for. I think in my generation, everybody is so obsessed with being “cool” and no one is brave enough to come out and say, “HEY. F*ck it. I’m a nerd. I love anime. I love video games. AND I’ll still fuck your bitch and make her watch anime with me.” So, I wanna be that voice for all those people out there that don’t give a fuck about being cool and rather just be themselves. This video is just one step of me achieving that dream.” – brandUn DeShay

Elijah Blake – Blueberry Vapors [Mixtape]

Elijah Blake is giving fans a new mixtape. In the summer, Elijah Blake delivered his debut album Shadows & Diamonds, which was led by singles like “I Just Wanna…” (later remixed, to great effect, by DeJ Loaf). Now that fans have been able to sit with the album for several months, the singer is ready to make his return. This time, it’s a free project though, hosted by Young California’s own DJ Carisma and Yesi Ortiz. Elijah tells us via e-mail, “This project was done over the span of two weeks at No I.D.’s studio on sunset. Me and Djemba Djemba were just brainstorming on what music would be like if it went back to pure honesty & feeling.. Not overthinking about the “radio record”, the current tempo of other singles, etc. So we did.. The coolest thing was watching these creatives who were all respected in their own right leave the ego at the door and collaborate freely in the name of music. They say some of us see music in color so when all was said and done, Blueberry Vapors was the most appropriate title for the mood, tone, color, and texture I feel this project conveys.” Download: Elijah Blake – Blueberry Vapors I’ve also included a mini-doc for “Blueberry Vapors” after the break.

Danny Matos – New Genre [Video]

With his stellar EP, ‘The Hangar’ out now, NYC upstart Danny Matos follows it up with sharp, gripping new visuals for the project’s affirming lead single, “New Genre,” which is produced by Surf School’s Rusty Mack. Given that the poetturnedemcee throws his contemporaries under the microscope throughout the track, it’s only fitting that he does the same to himself in the song’s visuals, which are directed by Angel Oz Navarro (who previously worked with Daytona and Fredro Starr). “New Genre” depicts the gifted lyricist chasing his innerchild for the duration of the clip, never quite capturing his younger self, but instead finally realizing it’s been with him all along. And it’s that resilience to embrace his youth that makes his work so engaging. Essentially, Matos is emphasizing the need for artists to speak freely and honestly, however painful that can be, while tapping into their creativity. Those are two crucial elements of crafting true art, and Matos embraces them throughout his new release. ‘The Hangar’ EP is available online where music can be streamed or purchased.
