Sir Michael Rocks – Populair [EP]

Sir Michael Rocks is something of an enigma in the hip-hop community. His sense of fashion, which drew the attention of A$AP Rocky in a Complex TV feature, ranges from a Kimono and drop crotch pants to the Gucci Mane-meets-Pokemon clothing designs of his own Exotic Gourmet line. A former member of the cult rap duo The Cool Kids, the Chicago emcee has a long-standing obsession with nature, from protesting at the Miami Seaquarium to teasing his fans with his own National Geographic show. As for his visuals, the lead single from the Populair EP, “Perfect,” which debuted via The A.V. Club, finds the rapper battling himself in a pixelated Street Fighter video game. Premiered by Complex, the Populair EP, which officially releases Friday, Sept. 11th, is the followup to last year’s Banco. Whereas Banco featured guest artists Mac Miller, Twista, and Iamsu!, the more personal and retrospective Populair features no guests. The Chicago roots are evident, particularly on the footwork-inspired, Aegyokiller-produced “Come Outside” and “L.M.B.,” and the project’s closing song, “Alone,” is possibly Rocks’ most personal song to date as he reflects on a break-ups and variety of other topics that’ve left him lonely. Together Banco and the Populair EP create Banco Populair, a reference to the Spanish financial institution of the same name. Stream: Sir Michael Rocks – Populair Tracklist 1. “In My Mode” (Prod. by Sir Michael Rocks) 2. “Come Outside” (Prod. by Aegyokiller) 3. “Pull Up” (Prod. by Indigochildrick) 4. “L.M.B.” (Prod. by Aegyokiller) 5. “Perfect”

Jay Rock: 90059 (Documentary) [Video]

Jay Rock’s highly-anticipated new LP “90059” drops tomorrow, September 11th. Pre-order your copy now. 90059. Five numbers that to the simplified mind might just seem like a zip code. When in reality, it’s more than that. “90059” signifies struggle, survival, family, growth, and most importantly, home to Watts native and TDE’s first signee, Jay Rock. The gutter’s in his blood, and knows he came from the dirt. Yet he’s still able to step up in the place with not a stain on his shirt. Haters want to talk, trying to work his nerves, but Jay Rock’s paid them no mind, he just hits them where it hurts. If you recognized the excerpts used for the intro of this paragraph, it’s without a doubt that you’ve been actively following the TDE OG and big brother to Kendrick, Soul-O, Q, Isaiah and SZA. No stranger to the game and no stranger to the streets, Jay Rock is ready to give hip hop appreciators what they’ve been anticipating – his new album, “90059.” Not falling victim to the fabricated opinions of the media, “90059” proves that Rock strays far from any “shadows” and remains confident in himself as an artist, lyricist, and voice for his hometown of Watts, California. Proving that this album goes deeper than sales, blog posts, entertainment etiquette and facades, is the latest installment of the Aplus Filmz mini doc series, “Aplus Docs.” Watch as the crew that’s been riding with TDE since Rock’s “Dollars Make Sense”, walks us through

Typ-iLL – Typ Statik [Audio]

After showing love to his hometown on “Without Love,” U.S. Army Veteran Typ-iLL is back with the neck-snapping “Typ Statik.” The blistering track is the first single off his upcoming album, ‘Veterans Day,’ which is produced entirely by Statik Selektah. The duo prove themselves to be a complementary force, with both doing the heavy lifting in their respective artistry. Typ instantly grabs your ear, flexing boastful and rewind-worthy rhymes like, “Who am I? A journeyman who’s on course/ Never needed a compass, solo with no accomplice/ ‘Til that mission’s accomplished, my dedication’s real/ Educated through living, that’s how I became iLL.” Not to be outdone, Statik serves up a head-nodding instrumental fueled by melodic strings and good-ol’ Boom bap drums. He also laces the hook with his signature scratching, emphasizing his collaborator’s name, and further setting the tone. “Typ Statik” is Hip-Hop for the heads and casual listeners alike—and it’s also one hell of a way to kick off the ‘Veterans Day’ campaign.
