What if I could get close enough to exchange in conversation with the brightest, most seasoned & experienced “star” in our realm, the Sun(or Amen-Ra), who in convo, would tell of some of the things its seen throughout the many trips around this universe. And after comparing, both the sun & I, realize that “the main thing we have in common, in our heart there’s a fire, never burning out”. *I dedicate this song to my father, Michael Willingham Sr., who just passed on Fathers Day. The song kinda reminds me of how he’d break things down to me. Of how he didn’t exactly understand my world, being 18 years older than I, but by principle, we still found things that we could relate on. Space needle producer Def Dee is easy to catch pushin’ the lac, blowin’ trees, and bumpin’ something fresh. He’s like most young 20-somethings. The difference is, that what Dee’s pushin’ out the speakers is usually his own concoction. When Dee signed a producer development deal with MMG last year, there was no rush, just a desire to hear what the promising beatsmith could do with a little time, some access, and an outlet. Today, Def Dee is excited to share Numb Again (feat. yU & Hassaan Mackey) the first track off of his upcoming spring release, 33 an’a third. The album is a remix compilation with a twist. Dee took unreleased verses from his MMG brethren, along with some classic verses, and started remixing. Then he called in the spittas to fill in the blanks with entirely new bars. The results speak for themselves. Numb Again features an unreleased yU verse that was originally for his group The 1978ers. The A-side of the next installment in Mello Music Group’s 7” Series comes from Diamond District/1978er producer/emcee yU. The gruff DMV MC is known for philosophical street rap but “Dreams” takes a different route – the result a hauntingly beautiful track likely to end up on repeat. Enlisting Danedra Rowell on vocals, yU eschews the new age boom-bap that got him noticed for something closer to all of our heartstrings. Featuring no rapped bars, “Dreams” is a bittersweet ballad that is less literal than emotive. It captures that late-night, pensive feeling us music heads are very familiar with. yU is able to craft a sound that is universal and hyper-local, breaking new ground for himself musically. The drums sound like they could be on any Diamond District-related project but the melody and chords don’t sound too far from something that could find its way onto radio.
