Watch Tuxedos Tiny Desk Concert [Video]

The pairing of Tuxedo is a natural feel in person, but highly unlikely on paper. Seattle-based producer Jake One has a who’s-who client list, from Rick Ross to 21 Savage — while DJ, singer-songwriter and producer Mayer Hawthorne is a renaissance soul man from Motor City. They stealthily debuted three tracks on SoundCloud in 2013 with only a black square stamped “Tuxedo” as the cover art, leaving fans wondering where this new funk was coming from. A few months later they unveiled their identities along with a debut self-titled LP, resurrecting a sound popularized by greats like The Gap Band, The Fatback Band and Roger Troutman. When Tuxedo arrived at NPR and Mayer Hawthorne spied a small ‘Ho!’ button sitting on Bob Boilen’s desk, he immediately beamed. “We use a big ‘Ho!’ button on tour,” he said. They didn’t bring a drummer, opting for a boombox — yes, a real boombox playing a real cassette tape, kids — and it was nostalgic delight from the start of the cassette’s hiss. The band was tight as ever, while their ace in the hole, Gavin Turek provided dance moves and the sweetest harmonies. Tuxedo set things off with a fan favorite from their first album, along with two from their latest, before closing it out with a red light special. It’s one thing to go against the grain for the sake of it — and another completely make it good. In this Tiny Desk concert, Tuxedo accomplished both.

Rhythm Roulette w/ Tuxedo [Video]

Jake One and Mayer Hawthorne form like Voltron to become production duo Tuxedo, the latest contestants on MASS APPEAL’s Rhythm Roulette. The pair stopped by Good Records—the shop, not the label—on East 5th Street in NYC, tied bandanas over their eyes, and grabbed up three random records to sample. Although the soundtrack to Blue Thunder had them somewhat perplexed, they also came up with a 12-inch single by Logg, and the Gamble & Huff sure shot, MFSB’s Love is the Message. You already know Jake One’s steez: from Chance the Rapper to 50 Cent, Drake, and Fun, the versatile Seattle beat smith gets it in wherever he feels. Hawthorne’s light-hearted brand of blue-eyed soul has won him fans since his 2009 Stones Throw debut. Tuxedo’s danceable tracks have an undeniable pop sensibility, they also show a heavy G-Funk and 80s electro influence, which shines through on the beat they built for us. “We got the disco kick offa Log, the rest of the drums from MFSB, and kind of a dramatic sound offa the Blue Thunder soundtrack,” said Hawthorne, who also added his soulful crooning to the sonic stew. “And that’s how you craft a whompin’-ass banger, Tuxedo style.” Watch them work up top.

Rhythm Roulette w/ Jake One [Video]

For this episode of Rhythm Roulette, Mass Appeal linked up with Jake One. Very few artists can traverse the constantly shifting borders between the underground and the mainstream like Jake One. The Seattle producer is respected, and rightfully so, in both worlds for his work with 50 Cent and G-Unit, De La Soul, E-40, DOOM, and more. He’s also worked on complete projects with Freeway and Brother Ali. Then with Mayer Hawthorne, he put out a feel good album under the Tuxedo moniker. Basically, his production credits weigh a ton. From Spin Cycle to his studio in Washington, Jake lucks out with The Best of Herbie Hancock, The Manhattans’ Forever By Your Side, and a Reverend E. Stanley Branch record. Jake One’s sampling methods kick in immediately as he skips around the records, finding a “Yeah!” from Rev. Branch and some drums from The Manhattans. He hears something worth taking from the choir on Rev. Branch’s record then drums from Herbie. The Manhattans also helped provide a snare. As the beat comes together all on his keyboard, he goes back to the choir to find some shouting to fill out the beat. Jake tinkers around with a bass line and before you know it, he’s sequenced a beat fit for the church and the club.
