Afrika Bambaataa: “Radio Refuses To Play More Political Hip-Hop” [Video]

The legendary Afrika Bambaataa sat down with VladTV recently to share his thoughts on the past-popularity of political/socially conscious records and the decline of today’s artists willing to embrace it, with Bambaataa feeling that today’s radio conglomerates have contributed to its lack of popularity by refusing to play records that fall out of line with the status quo. Even when a modern day rapper such as Immortal Technique chooses to address serious issues, his records will be ignored by radio which will always limit the amount of people who hear and embrace the music. That’s why Afrika encourages the culture to embrace online radio and streaming so that alternative voices can be heard just as much as standard radio tunes. Hear Afrika Bambaataa’s thoughts above.

Afrika Bambaataa On James Brown, Sampling And Hip Hop Today [Video]

Afrika Bambaataa sat down with VladTV and shared his thoughts on those who didn’t believe in Hip-Hop’s longevity, saying he never doubted the strength of the culture because he and his peers made it a mission early on to spread Hip Hop all over the world so it wouldn’t die in the same streets it was birthed. He also calls out today’s radio conglomerates, saying they don’t play enough varieties of Hip-Hop and have in turn stifled the public’s knowledge of how wide-ranging of a genre it is, as Hip-Hop is more than just rappers on a nice track. Bambaataa proceeds to give praise to James Brown as the “King of Soul,” and says he’s as much a part of Hip-Hop as rappers are, largely due to Hip-Hop sampling the soul legend so much. Bambaataa also spoke on his own music being sampled, saying he always has to make sure he’s properly paid royalties for his music, while encouraging other artists to always protect themselves when it comes to others sampling their work.

Afrika Bambaataa Breaks Down The 5 Parameters Of Hip-Hop Culture [Video]

Legendary OG of Hip-Hop, Afrika Bambaataa, recently sat down with VladTV and discussed the distinction between Hip-Hop’s music and its culture, and how the world’s voice has impacted popular American Hip-Hop. First off, the Zulu Nation founder addressed Star’s comment that Hip-Hop is a genre and not a culture, saying, “Hip-Hop as a music can take you anywhere, from space, to political, to silliness.” He then clarifies, “So, Hip-Hop could go anywhere it wants to go as a music.” Speaking further on the topic, Bambaataa asserts, “There’s definitely different laws and regulations dealing with it.” After naming off the first four elements of Hip-Hop, he then expounds upon one element in particular, knowledge. Although he lists it as the the fifth element, Afrika considers it to be the most important, saying, “knowledge, is really the first element.” Soon the conversation segues into artist appreciation, and Bambaataa discloses that Cee-Lo Green, Missy Elliott, and Busta Rhymes are among his favorites because of their progressive minds which greatly impact their creativity. He contends, “Those are the artists that I respect to the fullest. They don’t care what the industry say, or what somebody else say.” The full clip also includes his thoughts on newer artists like Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and J. Cole, plus his opinion on Iggy Azalea being a foreign emcee who’s making such a huge impact in the culture.

Afrika Bambaataa: “Punk Rockers Were First Whites To Accept Hip-Hop” [Video]

The Godfather of Hip-Hop, Afrika Bambaataa, sat down with VladTV to discuss his various nicknames, the origins of the culture and when exactly white people begin embracing Hip-Hop. The legend says that most of his nicknames were given to him by people who recognized his role in progressing the culture. He also spoke on his relationship with fellow Hip Hop great Kool Herc, saying they were both the hottest DJ’s within their respective neighborhoods in The Bronx. He also revealed the origins of the term “Hip-Hop” itself, saying it came from the raps of Keith Cowboy and Lovebug Starski. Bambaataa also reveals when white people actually started to embrace the culture, saying the punk rockers of downtown Manhattan were the first to show love from outside of the movement. He disagrees with Lord Jamar’s statements that Whites are “guests in the house of Hip-Hop,” saying in the early years you could make that argument. Today, however, Hip-Hop is a global phenomenon that has branched out to all people, similarly to religions having roots within one culture and eventually branching out to others. Get a history lesson from the great Afrika Bambaataa above.
