Detroit legends RJ’s Latest Arrival connect with Slum Village on their new video-single “One Step”.
Detroit has a rich history of nurturing exceptional musical talent, spanning from the golden era of Motown to the rise of Techno. RJ’s Latest Arrival, a legendary group, played a significant role in the local music scene during the transitional period of Funk & Soul with their popular dance hit “Shackles” from their 1984 Harmony album. Although the group disbanded in 1990, their multi-platinum record continued to resonate well into the late ’90s and gained further recognition when it was sampled in Nas’s 1999 hit “You Owe Me” featuring Ginuwine. Recently, the record was featured in the second season of STARZ’s BMF series, prompting RJ’s Latest Arrival to release a fully remastered version of their sophomore album, titled after their biggest hit, on streaming platforms earlier this year.
On Friday, June 2nd, 2023, the co-founding members and married couple RJ Rice (aka The Whiz) and DeDe Leitta reunited RJ’s Latest Arrival to release “One Step,” their first new single in over three decades. Available on all major digital streaming platforms through Synchronization/Ne’Astra Music, this fresh steppers’ groove rejuvenates the group’s original sound, just in time for the summer cookout season. Notably, the song features a guest appearance by Slum Village, marking a full circle moment and a family affair. It is worth mentioning that RJ had signed the original Slum Village trio, J Dilla, Baatin, and T3, to his label Barak Barak Records in 1998. Since the passing of Dilla and Baatin, RJ’s son Young RJ has officially joined the group, carrying on the Slum Village legacy alongside original member T3.
“It’s a great change to get from behind the desk, working with so many artists and managing Slum Village, to now create music for ourselves again”, RJ said in a statement. “I’m so excited with the new direction our music is taking, it’s fun to sing,” DeDe added.
