It’s an achievement that displays a colorful palate, a rich appreciation of hip hop, and an aptitude for the eclectic. K-os, born Kevin Brereton, brightly emits confidence through tracks like “Another Shot” and the single “Spaceship” where the music calls pop tendencies forward while Brereton leaves himself more exposed than ever lyrically. Brereton wanders farther on the record with songs such as “Dance in Yo Car” and “Turn Me Loose” where he finds himself more in the realm of rock and roll. Although exploration is thematically rooted in Can’t Fly Without Gravity, k-os still manages to pay homage to the golden era of 90s hip hop with songs like “Crucify” and “Boyz II Men.”

“My Canadian accent set me apart from kids there—they used to say ‘Yankee go home’ and stuff like that. I didn’t fit in, but going back opened up a well of passion,” says k-os. “‘Can’t Fly Without Gravity’ is the sound of somebody who’s consciously forgotten about pop music to understand it again. We all need to forget something that we like so that we can like it again.”
