SESSIONS: Teyana Taylor’s “VII” [Video]

Seven long years since we first saw her face grace MTV on My Super Sweet 16, Teyana Taylor of G.O.O.D. Music and Def Jam Records has finally released her debut album, VII. It’s been a grind for the singer and songwriter who has been in the public eye for most of her young life whether it came from her wildly popular social media following, perfecting her craft with friends and mentors like Kanye West and Chris Brown, or being linked romantically to an NBA player; Teyana’s always been in the public eye. The one question people always had was if she’d ever release some music of her own. Those questions where answered in her song-stealing cameos on G.O.O.D. Music’s Cruel Summer album, and now they are completely put to bed with the release of her debut album VII. “I just really wanted to bring everybody and give them a little insight on my journey,” Teyana told STASHED in this exclusive. “Most importantly, I wanted to give them a full body of work. I’m excited about that. I don’t really think there’s any message behind it but me being just a living example of patience and having a relationship with God and not giving up. It’s finally happening.” Working with a perfectionist like Kanye West, it isn’t surprising that Taylor took her time with the release of her debut, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “One thing I love about Kanye is that he gives you your creative control and your creative space, which is the most important,” explains the songstress. “Once you’re done with the project, you send it to him and he gives you his opinion. He’s like the icing on the cake, he lights the candles.” Check out the full sit down interview in the latest edition of SESSIONS with Teyana Taylor.
