The duo, Slim Jimmy and Swae Lee, reveal that they were going by a different name until they linked up with Mike Will Made It, who signed them to his Ear Drummers label. The two then decided to play on the label’s name by spelling it backwards, which stuck with them. When asked about growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi, the birthplace of Elvis Presley, Rae Sremmurd say that The King is beloved by everyone in the city, regardless of race. They also go into their own experiences growing up in Tupelo, and say it was really hard to have stability and make the transition into adulthood. Moving on, the group also speak about their music career, and say that music has always been a part of their lives, but things changed drastically when they made it on to BET. Soon afterward they linked up with Mike Will, and it was nearly a year later when he signed them to his label. Speaking of Mike, the duo say that he’s shown them how to be original and work harder to achieve their dreams as artists.

He always waits to hear the beats that he is going to record over, and molds his lyrics to the vibe he gets from listening to the beat a few times. Durk stated that he comes up with hooks rather quickly, and will sometimes freestyle songs without writing anything down as well. Durk concluded by detailing his partnership with Young & Reckless clothing, and how awesome it was to see himself featured on a massive billboard promoting the clothing line.

The music mogul said that while he’s not proud of dealing crack as a youngster, he said the big money set him up with the mentality to strive for more. Moving on, Dame said that after seeing a kid get senselessly killed in the street, which was depicted in the Roc-A-Fella film “Paid in Full,” he wanted out of the life and his eyes were opened after going to an industry party with his cousin. He added that he was motivated to really put his hustling skills to use after thinking that none of the people in the room with him were true hustlers. The Roc-A-Fella co-founder ended the conversation by speaking about his crew, “The Best Out,” back in the day. Dame said they were all about having fun and making money, which gave him a “mental independence and freedom” at a really young age.
