De La Soul Talks Gangsta Rap, Collaborations, Documentary & More [Video]

Exclusive in-depth interview with De La Soul at Paid Dues. Part 3 of our interview with De La starts with Pos sharing that he first wanted to be a DJ before an MC because back then the DJ was the life of the party and the MC was just doing echoes. As the interview goes on, Dave says that he enjoys some Gangsta Rap like NWA but that when Gangsta Rap started talking over Hip Hop culture De La never felt pressured to follow in the footsteps. Pos continued saying that De La always fit in to a few different facets of the culture and that they could tour with LL Cool J and RunDMC and then go do a Fine Young Cannibals tour. Dave goes on to say that some of their most memorable song experiences were corroborating with different artists from the Beastie Boys, The Gorillaz, Chaka Khan to Teenage Fan Club to so many others. Before we let De La go we asked them that having seen what Tribe Called Quest went through with their documentary, would De La be open to doing a documentary themselves. Substantial – Jackin’ Jill [Free LP]

In 2011 Baltimore emcee Substantial was facing the possibility of cancer. He ended up having preventive surgery and while laid up, decided to start working on a tribute album to Jill Scott, one of his biggest influences. It was his was of staying busy while healing, and at the same time to give people their roses while they could still smell them. The result is a free project Substantial calls “Jackin’ Jill” – a tribute project from built by “Jackin” music from various Jill Scott releases. This collection of reworks and remixes of her work blended by DJ Jav form a cohesive pseudo collaboration focused on life, love & music. Even the cover art was a labor of love, hand drawn by Substantial himself. Ludacris Perfroms For 70,000 Wearing A Kevin Ware Jersey In ATL [Video]

This weekend as Atlanta welcomed the Final Four festivities, which included a free concert in Centennial Olympic Park, Ludacris was among the crowd’s favorite. On Saturday, while over 70,000 people gathered in anticipation, he hit the stage showing his Louisville and Kevin Ware support, by sporting Ware’s jersey. He gave the crowd old hits and classic favorites, as only Ludacris can. He killed it, as usual, and as expected.
