The official video for “Don’t Close Your Eyes (Ashamed)” by KXNG CROOKED of Slaughterhouse and Truth Ali produced by Jonathan Hay and Ajami. This is part one of a five part video series that has been filmed in three cities: Louisville, Kentucky, Atlanta, Georgia and Chicago, Illinois. Producer Jonathan Hay had the idea to recreate the late Keith Whitley’s country classic from 1988 with the same title. Tragically, Whitley died from alcohol poisoning in 1989. In KXNG CROOKED’s verse he talks about alcoholism and getting sober. The video was shot in Kentucky, where the late country star once lived. The song also tackles child abuse, suicide and adoption. “Don’t Close Your Eyes (Ashamed)” is from the forthcoming Urban Hitchcock LP that features Cyhi The Prynce, Chino XL, Canibus, Professor Griff from Public Enemy, Royce da 5’9, Skyzoo, Planet Asia and more collaborations from KXNG CROOKED. The album is dropping on October 5th.

“Don’t Close Your Eyes (Ashamed Remix)” is a Billboard exclusive from the “The Urban Hitchcock LP” being released on August 4th. Producer Jonathan Hay decided to pay tribute to the late singer with “Don’t Close Your Eyes (Ashamed Remix),” a mashup that features Keith Whitley’s 1988 single “Don’t Close Your Eyes” alongside verses from Kxng Crooked and Truth Ali. “I feel the rap verses really capture the emotional torment of the original,” Hay tells Billboard.

Born in Bakersfield California, Truth represents the struggle and blue collar work ethic of his hometown combined with the laid-back appeal of his adopted home town San Diego, California. Truth was raised around music, as his grandfather, Sunny Stokes, was a jazz/funk singer and as such, he values the technical side of emceeing, like syllable/wordplay, metaphors and storytelling. His goal is to remain true to himself and create music that resonates for generations ahead. “I didn’t do my job if I’m not drenched in sweat after I perform,” Truth continues. “I want to connect with people so that they experience my emotions. And maybe, just maybe make someone who has dealt with the same struggles as me, feel free for that moment.” Truth Ali is currently completing his debut album, Trail Of Tears, but today he releases the projects first single, “Lost In Paradise,” featuring Royce Da 5’9”.
