He made the album in a month, hunkered down in a DMV studio with his main producer Louie Lastic. Of “Spectrum,” arguably the album’s foremost banger, GoldLink said, “that track was supposed to be like a timeline of when I first met the girl that I fell in love with up until the time that I am in today. Every bar meant something. I was telling a story the entire time. From the age of like 16 to 21.” GoldLink says he conceived AATDWT as a sort of prequel to The God Complex, his previous project. The God Complex was “bragadocious and bold,” a memoir of a particularly turbulent chapter of GoldLink’s life, and AATWDT was an effort put that braggadocio in context by telling the life chapter that came before it.
