Soul Connection: Yasiin Bey [Video]

It would not be an overstatement to say claim Yasiin Bey as being one of the most prolific visionaries. While many were first exposed to him as the rapper Mos Def, few realize that Bey had his start in show business as a child actor – which contributes to his ceaseless passion and experience on-screen. On top of these two professions, the Brooklyn-native has also made noise on the social and political tip, on which we have been taking notice of for a more than a decade now.

Yasiin Gaye (Yasiin Bey x Marvin Gaye) – Side 2: The Return [Mixtape]

Shifting focus for the second installment of “Yasiin Gaye”, Amerigo aimed to highlight the often overlooked accomplishments of Marvin Gaye’s role as the producer. “I wanted to build this side from more of Marvin’s original production work. He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before hip-hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other artist [Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc.] and re-present those classic Mos [Def] versus in a new context.” Yasiin Gaye: The Return (Side Two) by Amerigo Gazaway

Yasiin Bey & Mannie Fresh – Let’s Go [Stream]

The legendary Mannie Fresh was the latest guest on NPR’s Microphone Check. He spoke on his start in the industry, current state of music, working with other artists and even did a 20 minute set on the turntables for the audience. In between, he also debuted a new song with Yasiin Bey called ‘Let’s Go’ which is the second song we’re hearing from their long awaited joint album OMFGODBKNOLA (listen to first one ‘Black Jesus here). We have a a good quality rip of the full song which is sounding pretty solid.

Yasiin Gaye – Ms. Fat Booty (Soul Mates Remix) [Stream x Download]

“Yasiin Gaye: The Return (Side Two)” coming soon! Amerigo Gazaway’s *Soul Mates* series continues the theme of his previous work in creating collaborations that never were. On the series’ latest installment, Amerigo unites Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and soul legend Marvin Gaye for a dream collaboration aptly titled “Yasiin Gaye”. Building the album’s foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye’s Motown classics, Gazaway re-purposes the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework. Carefully weaving Bey’s tangled raps and Gaye’s soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality much closer to an authentic collaboration than a lukewarm “mashup” album.
