Read moreWhen you talk of beasts behind the boards, !llmind’s name rings bells. Not one to chase trends, the producer has focused on refining his own sound and found success experimenting within a framework where the freedom to create reigns supreme. While his highly coveted kits have become a staple in his production, he’s never tied to a specific snare or kick, but rather a vibe that becomes lucid after listening to the range of his work. On the latest episode of 5 Under Five, !llmind takes a look back at 2015 and recounts his highlights, which include co-producing “You & The 6” on Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and scoring a project for Star Wars. He was relatively tight-lipped on camera about what he has in the works for 2016, but after we stopped rolling he hinted at a few surprises to come. Ever on the humble, he’s likely downplaying what’s in store. However, he didn’t hesitate to show love to up-and-coming producers he has an eye on, as well as his favorite beats from 2015.

With the amount of music that’s released on a daily basis, you have to also imagine how much unreleased music exists on hard drives, especially music producers. I’ve reached out to some of them, asking to send some of their unreleased music to me. With this music (and some of my own) I’ve created a mix series called B.L.A.P. A refreshing collection of beats and songs you never heard yet, but probably should.” – @illmind Hit the jump for the full tracklist.

Read moreProducer Illmind, who was joined by Joell Ortiz, spoke to VladTV exclusively about the process of producing “You & The 6” off of Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late album. When asked about the project being a surprise drop, Illmind admitted that no one knew Drake was going to release it without any promotion. He explained that he woke up one day and found out that his track made the cut on the surprise album, and Illmind just rolled with it. During the conversation Illmind also spoke about being featured in a beat showcase with Kanye West in the early 2000s, which you can hear more about in the above clip.

Read moreMany emcees have teamed up with a producer and worked solely with them to release a classic album and/or mixtape. This time around the duo is Joell Ortiz and !llmind, and according to them, their collaborative effort “Human” began with just one phone call. “It was a series of hanging out and recording music, and we didn’t realize we were doing a project at all, until about halfway in,” remembers !llmind, whose worked with 2Pac, Drake, J. Cole and G-Unit in the past. When having to decide the name of their collaboration, Joell recalls telling !llmind “let’s think of the most human s*** possible so it’s non gimmicky – oh, human.” The two continue on with their thoughts on a rapper working exclusively with one producer, and why when you work with multiple hitmakers “the process just isn’t as smooth.” “It’s a lot more phone calls, a lot more clearances…sometimes you lose passion for the project,” Joell points out. Hear more about how !llmind and the Slaughterhouse lyricist came together above.
