Black Milk Interview w/ NPR [Stream]

Back in October, Detroit’s Black Milk released his sixth solo album, called “If There’s A Hell Below“. He came to New York and spoke with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Frannie Kelley about trying to impress J Dilla, transforming his music for live shows and always improving. “Each song, I want it to have a purpose,” he says. “I feel like I’m making some of the best music. I know it’s certain details that I’m looking at, that I know I’ve grown in, that most people won’t even hear.”

Black Milk Talks “If There’s A Hell Below” LP, Artist Maturity, Pete Rock, Bun B & More [Video]

Happy Holidays to all celebrating! Out Da Box TV is happy to bring you our final episode of the year, featuring an insightful talk with Detroit Producer/Emcee “Black Milk”. We got a chance to chat with Black recently about his latest LP entitled “If There’s A Hell Below”. He spoke about the initial concept of the album and what he had in mind for the theme. He also expounded on his maturity as an artist over the years, lessening the glamour raps and penning lyrics that reflected more of life’s struggles and his connection to community & family. We went on to dissect probably the most intriguing song on the LP entitled “Story And Her”, a song that finds Black linking up with a female crush of the past, that takes an unfortunate turn as the story comes to a close. The interview concludes with Black detailing how his collaborations with veterans Pete Rock and Bun B came to be, and finishes up with what’s next on the list for his music career. It was indeed a true pleasure linking up with the homie once again. He was one of our first #OutDaBoxTV interviews when we launched back in 2008, so it was great seeing him progress after all these years. Feel free to cop Black’s latest LP and stay tuned for more talks from him on the next segment of our uplifting #BeInspired Series, that piece will be be up by the end of the week. In the meantime,

Black Milk On Making “If There’s A Hell Below” [Video]

“If There’s A Hell Below” in stores now. “I feel like with the last two albums creatively I’ve been at a point where I’ve been more reflective with what I’ve been through in my life and what I’ve seen,” he tells WatchLOUD.com. “I don’t know if it’s got anything to do with me being a little older and kind of wanting to have a certain level of content and not rapping about rap anymore. I think that’s the main thing about it. Me being 31-years-old now I can look back and reflect on different things on what I’ve been through in the music industry, what I’ve been through as a person, as a young’n. All of that. I got a nice amount of things to talk about. So I feel like ‘No Poison…’ and this new album is me taking that step and getting more personal in my music than I’ve been in the past.” His very first line on Hell… is as revelatory as it is witty, “It’s that overdose daily, no if, and, buts or maybes/Have you addicted like that sh*t my auntie smoked in the ’80s…Auntie Trisha, what up…” “That’s something I actually had to deal with and that a lot of people had to deal with, people in your family that’s addicted to different drugs…I seen all of that,” he says.”Now I feel like I’m at a point where I feel I never expressed these different things through my music so I want to use this

Black Milk Talks “If There’s A Hell Below”, Working With Bun B And Pete Rock [Video]

For the past decade, Black Milk has been making exciting, genre-bending hip-hop records. The Detroit native got his start as a producer, but took up rapping in the early 2000s and has never looked back. Less than a month after putting out his latest full length, If There’s A Hell Below, he stopped by the HNHH offices to chat about his creative process, influences and recent collaborations with a wide variety of artists. Having paired up with fellow Detroit resident Danny Brown for the Black & Brown EP in 2011, Black Milk said he was fairly certain that he’d have a beat on Brown’s upcoming fourth album, and hopes to continue working with the left-field MC in the future. Black Milk went on to describe how Pete Rock and Bun B wound up on his album, saying he had known both of them before nabbing them for this project. One of the crazier collabs the rapper/producer’s had in the past few years is a 7″ single he recorded with Jack White. He described the recording session, speaking of White’s computer-less studio in awe. As such a versatile artist, Black Milk seems like he’ll always keep us guessing about his next move, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
