Blvck Spvde & The Cosmos – Doom [Video]

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Blvck Spvde and The Cosmos.

Forming a ten-piece band at the height of the pandemic was no easy task, but it was a calling that St. Louis-based musician Blvck Spvde couldn’t ignore. Known for his innovative approach to hip-hop, beat-making, and experimental music, Blvck Spvde was profoundly impacted by the loss of his father in 2019. This loss inspired him to create Blvck Spvde and The Cosmos, a large, avant-garde jazz collective that blends elements of Afrobeat, rock, and soulful sounds. Spvde describes the project as an effort to “bring the feel of my dad back in the room and all the things I was raised around that came from him”, infusing their music with a deep, nostalgic energy.

Blvck Spvde gathered a group of young musicians who shared his unexpected passion for free jazz. The ensemble features guitarist Joey Ferber, vocalist Precious Brown, keyboardist Kudda, drummers Dhoruba Shakur and Dorian Simms, percussionist Hodge, saxophonist Vintvge Vibes, trumpeter Joshiah Burton, and arranger/keyboardist Antonio Brown. After several years of performing across the Midwest, The Cosmos are now set to release their debut album, gearing up for their performance at one of St. Louis’ premier festivals, Music at the Intersection.

“Doom”, the lead single off their debut project “Overjoyed Through The Noise” (October 18), serves as the band’s compelling introduction to the world. This track is a tribute to the enigmatic MF DOOM, capturing the urgency of seizing life’s fleeting moments. It urges listeners to take action before it’s too late, echoing the somber realization of our inevitable fate. The song delves into themes of legacy, drawing a direct line to the band’s origins, with Spvde finding inspiration in his late father’s vibrant lifestyle and cherished record collection. The message is unmistakable: leave your mark before fading into obscurity.
