KXNG Crooked feat. Iliana Eve & Mike Smith – Too Ashamed [Audio]

KXNG Crooked connects with Iliana Eve and Mike Smith on a personal new track, titled “Too Ashamed”. It is produced by Jonathan Hay and King Graint. “Working on ‘Too Ashamed’ was a very emotional recording experience for everyone involved,” Hay explains to Billboard. “Kxng Crooked opened up for his first time about his alcoholism and recovery, which was a parallel experience shared with co-producers King Graint and Shachar Boussani who has seen friends struggle with addiction. Singer Mike Smith was feeling very ashamed spending so much time away from his wife and kids pursuing music. Iliana Eve and I were victims of a home invasion at the end of April and been dealing with the trauma from that which is heard in the song from a friend on my voicemail.” Stream “Too Ashamed” below.

Contour – Softer [EP]

In a wash of harrowing synths and deadpanned snares, Contour’s “Softer” sets out to pierce through the subterfuge of language and appearance. Sami Seal begins this succinct fifteen-minute sojourn explicating the fatal cost required in any true form of love. What follows is a longing for genuine human contact, which breaches through the superficial record-skip of rote, “I love you’s” and other shallow attempts to placate a yearning soul. “Softer” offers a pure translation of Contour’s emotional angst, as well as his earnestness in discovering some solution, if any should exist, for one of life’s most bewildering paradoxes. South Carolina’s Contour released “Softer” in February as an EP and as a short film. The audio and visual duality now grows closer together with our release of his project as a CD/DVD package with a lyrics and graphic booklet. Moniquea – Blackwavefunk [Album Stream]

Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Moniquea libertates her new album, “Blackwavefunk”. Moniquea established herself as one of the foremost female artists in the modern funk scene with her 2014 MoFunk Records debut album “Yes No Maybe”. For her followup, she continues exploring and expanding upon the boogie/modern soul sound of her debut, and at the same time, ventures bravely into a new sound inspired by the new wave and synthpop sounds of the 80’s. Thus, the album title: “Blackwavefunk”. “Blackwavefunk” sweeps through a spectrum of sounds and feels. The lead single, “Checkin’ Out,” channels the ‘street funk’ sound that Moniquea’s native California is known for, while “I Just Don’t Know” slows the pace and mood to offer up one of the few true downtempo love songs of the genre. “When You Are Away,” “Make You Feel My Love” (feat. Brian Ellis) and “Why Can’t You See” offer sleek, sexy modern soul soundscapes while the Turquoise Summers-produced “Knew It” thumps with a menacing g-funk bounce. Finally, the wave in “Blackwavefunk” reveals itself on the eccentric “Check Your Sources”, an anthem about sordid speculation and grievous gossip, over a musical backdrop that sounds like 1999-era Prince and Tha Dogg Pound somehow achieved perfect sonic fusion. The album’s closer, “Famous”, takes it further and gives a glimpse of what it might sound like if Bernie Worrell played synth basslines for OMD or Pet Shop Boys. The entire album can be streamed below or purchased directly via Bandcamp.
