The Lessondary – Ahead Of Schedule [Album Stream]

The ‘rap crew’ is a classic hip-hop trope that doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon. As such the Lessondary is a collective that has been putting in work for a while now and for their debut Ahead of Schedule it’s beyond time that you finally got to know them. The squad consists of Von Pea and Donwill (aka Tanya Morgan), Ilyas Nashid, Rob Cave (fka Spec Boogie), Che Grand, Jermiside, Elucid, Aeon and Brickbeats. Recording in various configurations over the years, the Lessondary has amassed a discography large enough to be it’s own section of a Mom & Pop record shop. Each member boasts a lengthy list of accomplishments as well but in their greatest collective effort to date they’ve finally assembled in service of themselves to produce Ahead of Schedule, a record that has been years in the making. With a sonic backdrop provided by Brickbeats, Aeon, Jermiside and Von Pea Ahead of Schedule is a lyrical whirlwind that isn’t short on cohesive topics or catchy hooks. Clocking in at 10 tracks (11 on the CD version), the cumulative effort effectively displays their dynamic as a self-contained unit with the ability to create a complete product from start to finish. Rhythm Roulette w/ DJ Dahi [Video]

The slap of Kendrick Lamar’s “Money Trees” is one of the most recognizable and groove-inducing beats of the modern era, and it’s all thanks to DJ Dahi behind the boards. We caught up with the auteur behind some of the dopest west coast production in hip hop today, and sent him off to a record store to play this week’s edition of Rhythm Roulette. With his picks of Torche’s Healer/Across the Shields, Lights’ Little Machines, and Neil Young’s Hawks & Doves, Dahi is able to stitch together doom metal, pop, and Neil’s classic rock into a really unique sounding composition that’s still got a hip hop bounce. Using snippets of Young’s vocals he creates an ambient, looped background, and even breaks out the harmonica to jam out — we’ll bend the record sampling rules slightly in this case. Check out Dahi’s flip above.

Masta Ace Remembers Recording “The Symphony” With The Juice Crew [Video]

MC Serch and Masta Ace were guests recently on Rap Is Outta Control with DJ Eclipse. Serch couldn’t help ask Ace about his favorite Hip Hop posse record “The Symphony” and how the recording process went down. Ace goes into detail about how MC Shan was originally supposed to be on the song, but didn’t show up to the studio that day. Craig G needed a ride to the session and Masta Ace offered to drive as he was interested in hearing the outcome of the song. When each emcee has their verses ready and it was time to record, there was hesitation in the room of which emcee would record first. Marley Marl asked Ace to break the ice by recording a test verse. Masta Ace recorded a verse that he had written and memorized prior, and everyone liked it enough to keep him on the song and as a member of The Juice Crew. 28 years later, Masta Ace is still recording music with consistent quality. Check out his latest album The Falling Season with KIC Beats.
