Gorilla Zoe Breaks Down How Hip-Hop Controls Pop Culture [Video]

Courtesy of Pe$o, VladTV offers this exclusive with Gorilla Zoe in which he speaks on how he fell into the rap game, the influence hip hop has on pop culture, his tatts and more. Gorilla Zoe begins by explaining how his career as a rapper began, saying, “As crazy as it sounds, I didn’t wake up one day and was like ‘You know what, I want to be a rapper.’” The “Hood Figga” rapper goes on to share that he never “studied” the requirements to become a “dope artist.” He then confides how he started making music. Next, the discussion demonstrates Zoe’s perception of the business behind Hip-Hop. Relying upon his wisdom built from his endeavors in retail allows the “Juice Box” rapper to best capitalize his approach to Hip-Hop. Understanding the importance of erecting a “grass-roots” following, Gorilla Zoe attests that that’s what will help a rapper sustain longevity within the game. Finally, the conversation delves into Hip-Hop’s global impact on pop culture, which Zoe believes is huge. Check out the full clip to also see what Gorilla Zoe has to say about being recognized overseas, the meaning behind his tatts, and his upcoming project, ‘Red Cup.’

The month of March kicked off with some big news for a little-known Chicago rapper, Hollywood Holt. The rapper has been bubbling underneath the surface for a minute, however, he quickly elevated in the rap stratosphere with the announcement that he signed with G.O.O.D. Music. Now, it’s time to play catch up. Holt sat down with us during SXSW, and gave us the scoop on his style and sound for all the newbs. He also explained how his connection with Kanye turned into a record deal. Consider this your formal introduction to Holt. “I’ve known Kanye, not as really tight friends or nothing, but we’ve known Kanye and the whole team for years…I was breakdancing in the crowd at his listening party for Graduation,” Holt explained. “I’ve never tried to jump under the G.O.O.D. umbrella beforehand, it was always just like we’re doing our thing. I’ve always been a very self-sufficient artist, me and my cousin Mano, we kinda just built ourselves and Kanye took notice. The first video I ever shot, Kanye posted it on his blog back in the day.” Holt went on to explain how a chance encounter with Kanye in NYC led to a working relationship, and how Ye finagled Holt’s “Back to Black” Amy Winehouse cover for “The Great Gatsby” film. “I was in New York with the Madden brothers, and we were just hanging out, apparently at some really cool bar club that no one can get into, I don’t know, I found out

N.O.R.E. Explains Shooting Someone The Day He Signed Record Deal [Video]

Noreaga sat down with VladTV and shared his story of signing a record deal and shooting someone on the same day. The Lefrak MC begins by saying his projects had a lot of haters who would rub it in every time he was seen in the hood while also making moves in the industry, saying most people don’t realize that just because you’re on the radio or get signed doesn’t mean you’re automatically rich. He was eventually signed by Penalty Records after freestyling on Funkmaster Flex’s Hot 97 show the night before. Penalty gave him, Capone, and Combat Jack $5,000 each in cash. Still, that didn’t change the fact that he lived in the PJ’s, so on his way home, he ran into someone who continued with the slick comments, admitting he lost his temper and fired on him. Run The Jewels feat. Zack De La Rocha – Close Your Eyes (And Count To F**k) [Video]

“When Run The Jewels sent me this track, I knew we had the opportunity to create a film that means something. I felt a sense of responsibility to do just that. We had to exploit the lyrics and aggression and emotion of the track, and translate that into a film that would ignite a valuable and productive conversation about racially motivated violence in this country. It’s provocative, and we all knew this, so we were tasked with making something that expressed the intensity of senseless violence without eclipsing our humanity. For me, it was important to write a story that didn’t paint a simplistic portrait of the characters of the Cop and Kid. They’re not stereotypes. They’re people – complex, real people and, as such, the power had to shift between them at certain points throughout the story. The film begins and it feels like they have been fighting for days, they’re exhausted, not a single punch is thrown, their violence is communicated through clumsy, raw emotion. They’ve already fought their way past their judgments and learned hatred toward one another. Our goal was to highlight the futility of the violence, not celebrate it.” For El-P of Run the Jewels “this is a vision of a seemingly never-ending struggle whose participants are pitted against each other by forces originating outside of themselves.” Adds partner Killer Mike “this video represents the futile and exhausting existence of a purgatory-like law enforcement system. There is no neat solution at the end because there
