Gummy Soul – Bap City (Video Remixes) [Mixtape]

The creator of 93 Still is back again with the new video remix project, Bap City. Featuring grimey 90s New York hip-hop artists M.O.P., AZ, Kool G Rap, and The Beatnuts, it takes you back to the days of 40 Below Tims and Champion hoodies, and showcases the harder side of hip hop’s Golden Era. “Everyday in high school, I would come home and watch Rap City,” says Gummy Soul founder Wally Clark. “That’s how I would discover some of the more underground artists of the time, such as Teflon and Smoothe Da Hustler. I wanted to create a block of videos that could be viewed together, and would capture the essence of watching Rap City in the 90s.” Filled with dark, grimy samples, over hard boom bap drums, Bap City is the perfect soundtrack for these freezing winter nights. So strap on your Tims and hoodies and enjoy Bap City. Bap City (Video Remixes) by Gummy Soul

Gummy Soul x Souls Of Mischief – 93 Still [Album]

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of their classic record 93 ‘Til Infinity, Souls of Mischief graciously opened their vaults to give Gummy Soul the exclusive acapellas of the album, to remix for the first time ever. As the framework for the project, Gummy Soul’s Wally Clark dug through his collection, picking only samples that artists used for hip hop songs in 1993. Samples that were used to create classic albums by artists such as Digable Planets, Snoop Dog, ATCQ and Black Moon, were re-contextualized to provide familiar, yet updated versions of some of hip-hop’s most beloved material. “I wanted to take all of the records that people used back then, and create new compositions using the same techniques they were using – such as filtered bass lines, classic drum breaks, echo-y horns – to make an album that sounds like it could have been released in 1993,” says Clark. “It was an amazing exercise trying to capture the essence of a sacred time in hip-hop. It also allowed me to playfully use samples that are normally deemed off-limits, because they are too well known.” Be on the look out for Soul’s of Mischief’s new album “There Is Only Now,” produced by Adrian Younge, as well as the 93 ‘Til documentary, featuring Questlove, Mos Def, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock and more. 93 Still by Gummy Soul

Gummy Soul’s Open Letter To Sony Music

Dear Sony Music, Thanks for reaching out. The fact that our small independent label warranted the resources of your legal team speaks to our work ethic and we appreciate the validation. In response to your copyright infringement claim over Gummy Soul’s Bizarre Tribe; A Quest To The Pharcyde by Amerigo Gazaway (“Bizarre Tribe”), understand the vast majority of the samples used to create Bizarre Tribe were not taken from the catalog of A Tribe Called Quest (“ATCQ”). What your diligence failed to uncover is that Gummy Soul is not in the business of merging one artist’s instrumentals with vocals of another. Had one of the six Sony attorneys copied in your email deemed it necessary to listen to Bizarre Tribe before pursuing legal action, you would know that our projects are much more nuanced. To be clear, the re-orchestrated instrumentals on Bizarre Tribe were sourced from the original jazz, soul, and funk recordings SAMPLED by ATCQ, allowing Amerigo to create his own, distinct production within a similar framework. Given the brief and limited use of ATCQ material on Bizarre Tribe (around 2 minutes of material out of a 55 minute album), and the method by which our reinterpretations are created, it is clear that Amerigo’s effort is protected under the fair use exception of copyright infringement. We would further add that the presence of documentary style sound-bites, interviews, and news clips included on Bizarre Tribe to provide a narrative of the group’s history and commentary on their work only further
