Bekay – 2016 Year In Review [Audio]

From celebrity deaths to political turmoil, it’s safe to say that 2016 has been one of the craziest years in recent memory. And to remind us about everything that went down—with plenty of venom and hilarious punchlines mixed in—Brooklyn rapper Bekay returns with his latest annual rundown, “2016 Year In Review.” The ridiculously talented emcee goes in for nearly five minutes straight over the horns-fueled instrumental from Fat Joe & Remy Ma’s huge single, “All The Way Up.” And in doing so, Bekay references damn-near all of what happened in ‘16, from the Suicide Squad movie and its lead actress (Margot Robbie), to Marco Rubio sweating during the debates, to Pokemon Go taking over the mobile landscape. Of course, there’s plenty of that aforementioned venom, too. It’s aimed squarely at the likes of President-elect Donald Trump, DC Comics’ fails at the box office (looking at you, Batman v. Superman, and a fellow Brooklyn native who blocked Bekay on Twitter (*cough*Talib Kweli*cough*). Not one to stick to the negatives, Bekay shows love to those we lost this year, including Prince and Phife Dawg, while praising new releases from rap giants De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. There’s also a heartfelt send-off to the pop-legend George Michael, who died suddenly on Dec. 25. So what’re you waiting for?—give “2016 Year In Review” a listen right now. Let’s hope for a better year and a better world, happy new year!

Brainiac Beats feat. El Gant, Vvs Verbal & Bekay – Blessed [Video]

As an artist, the come-up is just as hard as it is gratifying, and it’s the latter quality that makes every win that much more successful. That message is at the core of Spanish producer, Brainiac Beats’ smooth single, “Blessed”, and its newly released visuals. Directed by 2050films, the video embraces the idea of remembering where you came from, through the black-and-white footage of a young artist’s creative process. His narrative is interspersed between shots of heavyweight vocal guests—NYC rappers El Gant, Vvs Verbal, and Bekay on the bars, and Dallas singer Glen ‘Grey’ Reynolds on the hook—posted up on a Brooklyn basketball court. The lyrics represent the rise and drive of the protagonist; characteristics that are mirrored through the individual success of all of the featured artists. What does the future hold for the young and determined creative? Maybe Brainiac Beats will let us know when he drops his next single. “Blessed” is now available for free download on SoundCloud via Gris Materia Records, here.

Bekay – 2015 Year In Review [Audio]

As we welcome the new year, Hip-Hop heads can reflect on 2015 with Bekay’s annual ‘year in review.’ For over a decade now, the Brooklyn emcee has been condensing the previous twelve months’ events into a succinct, humorous, no-punches-pulled track. Next to Skillz, Bekay’s series is the longest-running “wrap-up” in the game. And while his contemporary tends to focus more on the music industry, Bekay covers sports, politics, general f*ckery, and everything in between. That much is evident from the jump, where the Brooklyn rapper pays homage to this year’s smash hit, Straight Outta Compton, before referencing the Drake and Meek Mill beef, the Pope rolling through New York in “a f*cking armored golf cart,” and Ronda Rousey’s vicious beat down, all set to the instrumental for Drake’s momentous “Back To Back” diss. That’s just a sampling of what’s covered here, and if any of it offends you, take a note from Bekay: stop taking everything so damn seriously. Happy New Year!

Bekay – Thug Music [Stream]

After many setbacks from hurricane Sandy, to countless losses in Bekay’s personal life, he relentlessly gears up for his long awaited album release “Survivorman”. Quoting the Brooklyn emcee him self. “I’ve been through hell the last 3-4 years, the kind of sh*t I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but nothing is gonna stop me from reminding people the quality of emcee I am with an LP that will rival my last album Hunger Pains as the best work I’ve ever done, I define Hungry, and the true hip hop sound of the gutter, the struggle, and people who don’t have a f*king pot to pis in”. Bekay reminds us why he is known as that dude who absolutely goes there, releasing an X rated verbal onslaught over Alchemist classic production in “Thug Music” with lines that aren’t for the weak of heart, such as “I’m a crook a prick, look I’m sick, like hooker spit, be an emcee? read a book you dick”. It is safe to say he isn’t playing games this time around and the voice of the Brooklyn streets will be heard.

Bekay – 2014 Year In Review [Stream x Download]

Brooklyn spitter Bekay reviews the past year. Before we enter the new year by getting together with our friends and family for our annual shenanigans, let’s first reflect on the past 12 months. For Hip-Hop’s most thorough and hilarious summarization of the year, we turn to Bekay and his now decade strong, “Year In Review” series. Whereas last year’s iteration had the outspoken spitter dropping bars over Pusha T’s standout hit “Numbers on the Boards,” he’s chosen to continue the tradition by giving us a rundown of 2014 over Drake’s “0 to 100” instrumental. No story is sparred; from Derek Jeter’s retirement, America’s tumultuous relationship with North Korea, Bill Cosby’s rape accusations, and everything else that went down in the world of politics, sports and entertainment, Bekay delivers another hit for us to reminisce over. Let’s hope we can find more peace in 2015, as we’re sure Bekay will come through with another gem for the upcoming year, but only after he drops his long awaited LP, Survivor Man.
