John Legend feat. Pharrell Williams – Fireflies [Video]

John Legend and Pharrell Williams confront inequality and neighborhood violence in Paul Hunter’s “Fireflies” video, from the upcoming album Muse.

John Legend puts the desire to escape under pressure on “Fireflies.” Featuring and produced by Pharrell Williams, the song traces that impulse through inherited trauma, neighborhood violence, and a system that offers too few ways out. Its recurring “get away” refrain sits alongside verses about the conditions that make leaving so urgent.

Paul Hunter’s black-and-white video brings those concerns into a family’s living room, placing Legend at an upright piano amid the household’s conversations and tensions. Elsewhere, he performs with the Hollywood Cinematic Orchestra against stark studio backdrops. Moving between those settings connects the formal performance to the domestic lives at the center of the song.

The writing is particularly pointed in a verse that links housing projects, processed food, incarceration, and funeral processions through variations on the same word. A later passage turns toward ancestry and self-belief, before the final verse returns to a neighborhood where sudden violence can erase any long-term plan. Hope remains present, but the song keeps returning to what threatens it.

Following “Daylight,” “Fireflies” offers another preview of Muse, due October 23 via Republic Records. Pharrell produced the album in full and co-wrote it with Legend; here, their collaboration pairs the project’s orchestral ambitions with an explicitly social perspective.
