AZ Chike – No Rest For The Wicked [Album Stream]
AZ Chike expands his West Coast sound and turns inward on No Rest For The Wicked, with Tyler, The Creator, JMSN, Pharrell, Hit-Boy and more.
No Rest For The Wicked turns AZ Chike’s biggest burst of visibility into an album about what sits behind it: Los Angeles loyalty, family pressure, sleeplessness, and the uneasy arithmetic of success. After his scene-stealing turn on Kendrick Lamar’s “peekaboo” from GNX, Chike uses his Warner Records debut to widen the frame without abandoning the blunt, punchline-heavy writing that carried him through years in L.A.’s rap underground.
That tension gives the album its shape. “Sky Rockets” keeps his sense of place close to the surface, while “Wonder” and “Uncomfortable Conversations” move toward anxiety, responsibility, and the pressure that comes with becoming the person other people depend on. Even when the money talk returns, it often carries some residue of what came before it. The flexes and jokes are still there, but they now sit beside a more explicit account of what success has and has not fixed.
The expanded production palette helps without turning the record into a résumé. Pharrell handles “Lamb Truck Keys,” Terrace Martin and Taylor McFerrin work on “Sky Rockets,” Hit-Boy produces “Packed Up” and “Rock Bottom,” and Tyler, The Creator brings a funkier angle to both “Look Like My Mama” and “The World Is Ours.” Tyler appears on those two tracks as well, while JMSN joins Chike on “Need Your Love.”
Kendrick Lamar’s contribution is less obvious but more interesting than a guest verse would have been. Chike told Bootleg Kev that Lamar and Sounwave helped him think about No Rest For The Wicked as an album rather than a pile of songs, cutting material and reconsidering the sequence; Lamar specifically pushed “God’s Favorite” closer to the front. That kind of editing fits the finished record: the bigger names broaden Chike’s surroundings, but the album keeps returning to his own story.
