Jhené Aiko – Westside Whimsy [Album Stream]

Jhené Aiko returns with Westside Whimsy, a California-rooted album featuring Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Larry June, Tyga and OHMA.

Jhené Aiko has spent much of the past year turning Westside Whimsy into a broader California idea. On her first studio album in six years, that framing finally becomes musical: the Los Angeles singer draws on the ’90s R&B, rap, and soul she grew up with, along with the car culture, beaches, surfing, and road trips she associates with home.

The guest list reinforces that geography without taking over the record. Ab-Soul appears on “Love Bomb,” Tyga joins “Like, Whatever,” Larry June turns up on “Neighbors,” and Kendrick Lamar reconnects with Aiko on “So Good.” Those collaborations place several generations and corners of California rap around an album that remains firmly centered on Aiko.

That distinction matters after the long gap between albums. Rather than building the return around one oversized collaboration, Aiko gives herself most of Westside Whimsy alone. The previously released “Break” arrives early in the sequence, carrying its fixation on heartbreak, absence, and uncertainty into the larger record before the album gradually widens back toward its California setting.

By the closing stretch, even the titles bring that setting back into focus: “Beach Boy” arrives among the final six songs before OHMA joins Aiko for the closer, “Golden Coast.” Westside Whimsy ultimately treats the West Coast less as scenery than as the connective tissue between Aiko’s musical upbringing, her collaborators, and the world she has been building around the album.
