Dinner Party On ‘Whatchu Bringing?’ And Their Collective Chemistry [Video]

Dinner Party discuss the chemistry and shared history behind Whatchu Bringing? in their new short film, “Ingredients.”

What makes Dinner Party Dinner Party? “Ingredients” answers that question without a new song or a performance clip. Directed by APLUS, the short film brings Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, 9th Wonder, and Phoelix together for a conversation in which old stories, mutual admiration, and plenty of teasing explain the collective better than a conventional album promo could.

They trace the project back to 9th Wonder’s beats, which Terrace Martin brought into the early sessions before the others began adding their ideas. 9th is celebrated as both producer and historian, while Phoelix, who appears on seven tracks of Whatchu Bringing?, is praised for far more than his vocals: arranging, musicianship, production, and a calming presence in the studio. Terrace, meanwhile, is briefly crowned the group’s in fact leader before becoming the subject of repeated height jokes.

The result is a relaxed companion to the album, built around the relationships behind the music rather than another rollout track. “Ingredients” follows the in-studio performance of “Stop Being Late” and the animated visual for “If It Ain’t Broke (Love Wins).”
