A decade after appearing on one of XXL’s most memorable Freshman covers, G Herbo joins DJ Drama to revisit the moment and everything that followed. The Chicago rapper describes his inclusion in the 2016 class as “divine timing,” recalling an era when each artist brought a clearly defined style instead of following the same formula.

Herbo shared the cover with 21 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert, Kodak Black, Lil Yachty, Denzel Curry, Anderson .Paak, Dave East, Desiigner, and Lil Dicky. His place in that group was already firmly established through Chicago drill, vivid street narratives, and a direct approach to rapping that distinguished him from many of his peers.

During the conversation, he explains why he never felt pressured to prioritize melodic records or manufacture crossover hits. Staying consistent eventually gave him the freedom to build a lasting career without abandoning the music that first connected with listeners.

His view of success has also evolved. These days, it includes independence, fatherhood, an upcoming marriage, and the ability to release music without allowing industry expectations to dictate every decision.
