REKS & DJ Mickey Knox – Declaration Of Independence [Video]
REKS and DJ Mickey Knox confront slavery, white supremacy, and America’s unfulfilled promises in the Queen Philosophical-directed video for “Declaration of Independence.”
REKS turns Independence Day rhetoric back on American history with “Declaration of Independence,” his latest collaboration with DJ Mickey Knox. Released on July 3, the track challenges the gap between the country’s promises of equality and the racism woven through its political leadership.
Rather than treating patriotic language as something beyond criticism, REKS confronts the contradictions behind it, including slavery, white supremacy, and the people historically excluded from the freedom proclaimed in America’s founding documents. DJ Mickey Knox supplies the production, while REKS handles the lyrics and delivers the record as direct social commentary rather than a ceremonial Fourth of July statement.
Queen Philosophical directs the official video, giving the song a visual counterpart that maintains its uncompromising tone. “Declaration of Independence” also extends the working relationship between REKS and DJ Mickey Knox following “Vision Board,” which arrived in April.
