Kamal. and Natanya look back on home, distance, and a past relationship on “back then.” Written around the strange ache of visiting your parents after moving out for the first time, the song follows the memories that return when familiar rooms no longer feel entirely yours.

Both singers approach that nostalgia with restraint, letting their voices carry the tension between comfort and loss. What begins with the experience of returning home gradually opens into something more personal, as old surroundings also bring unresolved feelings from a former relationship back to the surface.

“back then” will appear on Kamal.’s debut album, how the f** does everybody else manage?*, which arrives on July 17. Executive-produced by Jonny Coffer, the album also includes appearances from Dave and Keaton Henson.
