The Doppelgangaz – Beats For Brothels, Vol. 9 [Mixtape]

The Doppelgangaz return with Beats for Brothels, Vol. 9, a grimy 18-track dose of black-cloak humor, dusty loops, and warped New York rap.

The Doppelgangaz do not treat the Beats for Brothels series like a side folder of loose instrumentals. On Beats for Brothels, Vol. 9, Matter ov Fact and EP move through grimy loops, crooked drum pockets, short interludes, and fully rapped moments with the same oddball discipline that has always made their world feel separate from whatever else is happening around them.

Across 18 tracks, the New York duo lean into the murky, self-contained Doppelgangaz language: black-cloak humor, dusty production, left-field punchlines, half-lit scenery, and hooks that sound like they were pulled from some warped late-night broadcast. “Just Another Day in the P.U.,” “What’s Going awn?,” “Boidz,” “Run Roughshod Over,” “Rubber Stamps,” and “Must Be Dreamin’” give the album its more vocal-driven shape, while the shorter cuts work like smoke breaks between the schemes.

There is still plenty of instrumental weight here, but Vol. 9 is not just a beat reel. The record has that familiar Dopp balance between crusty sample work and bizarre character detail, where even the throwaway lines feel folded into the mythology. It is funny, grimy, slightly deranged, and exactly as insulated as a Doppelgangaz project should be.
