Kelela lets “outta time” breathe like something that has been waiting for the right room. Joined by A. K. Paul, she turns the track into a slow-burning exchange, with his guitar, production, and vocals folding into her voice rather than crowding it. The song has that suspended, slightly bruised quality Kelela does so well: intimate, heavy with feeling, but still shaped with precision.

The track comes from her forthcoming album new avatar, out July 10 via Warp Records. “outta time” is the fourth preview from the project after “idea 1,” “linknb” and “point blank,” and it carries a longer history than the usual pre-album single. Kelela wrote it back in 2016 while working on Take Me Apart, then held onto it until the surrounding sound world made sense. That patience comes through in the record—nothing feels overworked, but everything feels placed.
