Released through Section Eight Arthouse and Loma Vista Recordings, the album follows 2024’s Dark Times and opens a new chapter for the Long Beach rapper. Across “Blackberry Marmalade,” “Go! Go! Gorilla,” “White Flag,” “TV Guide,” “Only in America,” “Cotton,” and the rest of the record, Staples moves through fear, violence, spectacle, memory, and survival with the kind of plainspoken precision that makes even his bleakest lines feel almost casual.

Musically, Cry Baby leans into a rougher, more live-wired palette than some of his earlier work. The production pulls from scuzzy rock textures, post-punk pressure, and loose, uneasy grooves, giving Staples a backdrop that feels jagged without swallowing his voice. Nothing here sounds polished for comfort. The record sits in that familiar Vince Staples zone where humor, numbness, protest, and observation blur into one another.

The rollout has already made the album’s visual language hard to miss. “Blackberry Marmalade,” “White Flag,” and “Cotton” all arrived with official videos, extending the record’s fixation on violence, media, and American mythology without reducing the songs to simple statements. On Cry Baby, Staples does not need to raise his voice to make the picture feel grim. He just keeps pointing at it until the absurdity turns heavy.
