Watch Jay-Z’s Full Freestyle At Roots Picnic [Video]

Jay-Z opened his Roots Picnic headlining set in Philadelphia with a sharp four-minute freestyle.

Hov did not ease his way into Roots Picnic. Backed by The Roots in Philadelphia, he opened his May 30 headlining set with a four-minute a cappella freestyle that immediately became the weekend’s loudest rap conversation.

The moment arrived before the nostalgia could fully take over. Instead of simply walking through the catalog, Hov stepped onstage and used the freestyle to answer the noise around his name—the Drake chatter, the Nicki Minaj back-and-forth, Kanye West’s public shots at his family, and the usual Roc-A-Fella mythology that never really disappears. It was sharp, controlled, and pointed without sounding like he had to chase the room for attention.

That made the rest of the performance hit differently. The night still moved through the classics, with The Roots giving the set live-band weight and guests like Jazmine Sullivan, Bilal, Meek Mill, Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Peedi Crakk, and Young Gunz turning parts of the show into a wider Roc/Philly moment. But the freestyle set the temperature first. For an artist who can disappear from the solo stage for years and still bend the conversation in a few minutes, that entrance said plenty.
