Nia Smith – High [Audio]
Nia Smith returns with “High,” a reflective alt-soul single ahead of her upcoming EP Payback Is A Dog.
The songstress has a sharp ear for emotional detail, and “High” gives her another quietly affecting moment ahead of Payback Is A Dog. The South London singer keeps the track light on its feet, but the writing carries a heavier kind of release: growing out of old attachments, letting certain people and places fall away, and realizing that some things simply do not fit anymore.
There is no need to oversell the drama here. “High” moves with an alt-soul softness that leaves space around Smith’s voice, turning the song into something intimate without making it feel fragile. Written with Ilsey Juber, Hannah “Violet Skies” Berney and Jack Lawson, with Lawson also handling production, the record sits in the same thoughtful lane that has made Smith one of the more compelling new R&B voices out of the UK.
Her next EP, Payback Is A Dog, is expected on June 26, following “Tough” with DESTIN CONRAD, “High” adds a different shade to that chapter: less confrontational, more reflective, but still direct enough to leave a mark.
