JPEGMAFIA – EXPERIMENTAL RAP [Album Stream]

JPEGMAFIA turns a genre tag into a provocation on EXPERIMENTAL RAP, his new album out now via AWAL.

Across 25 tracks, Peggy leans into the unstable, confrontational side of his music: blown-out drums, warped vocal pockets, flashes of melody, sharp digital noise, and the kind of sudden left turns that make his records feel like they are editing themselves in real time.

The title is blunt, almost funny in its directness, but the album does not play like a simple label exercise. After the guitar-heavy charge of I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU and last year’s Flume collaboration, We Live In A Society, EXPERIMENTAL RAP puts JPEGMAFIA back in a space where structure feels secondary to momentum. Songs like “babygirl,” “War Over Land” and “¥ (Yen)” move with different textures, but they all carry that same clipped intensity: Peggy rapping, producing, shifting the ground under himself, and refusing to let the record settle for too long.

There is a lot packed into the album’s 52-minute runtime, but it rarely feels like excess for excess’ sake. The shorter tracks help the record snap from one idea to the next, making EXPERIMENTAL RAP feel less like a neatly arranged statement and more like a full system overload from one of rap’s most restless architects.
