The R&B songstress has never treated nostalgia like a museum piece, and Retrospect makes that clear from the first groove. Her first album since 2018’s T.K.O. (The Knock Out) pulls from the shimmer of late-’70s and ’80s funk, soul, pop, and R&B, but the record never feels trapped in a costume. The drums snap, the basslines move, and Mýa sounds fully locked into the performance side of the music.

Across 16 songs, Retrospect brings in D-Nice on “Give It to You (Album Mix),” Snoop Dogg on “No Pressure,” Too $hort on “Just a Little Bit,” Joyner Lucas on “Ain’t Another,” 21 Savage on the “ASAP” remix, plus Dizzy Wright and Phil Adé later in the sequence. The pre-release singles already hinted at the direction, but the full album gives the concept more room to breathe: warm, polished, playful, and rooted in the kind of R&B that still remembers the dance floor.

There is a clear throwback pulse running through the project, but Mýa keeps the focus on feel rather than imitation. Retrospect sounds like an artist revisiting the records, rhythms, and textures that shaped her without losing sight of where she is now.
