Mike D is back in motion with “Switch Up,” his first proper solo single and a wired, beat-heavy burst that does not lean on nostalgia as much as it mutates it.

The Beastie Boys co-founder sounds loose and alert over a track that folds breakbeat pressure, bassline movement, synth stabs, and guitar grit into something restless and slightly off-kilter.

The song started in Mike D’s home studio during sessions with his sons, Davis and Skyler Diamond, who make music together as Very Nice Person. Alongside Carter Lang, they help shape “Switch Up” into a track that feels more like a late-night experiment pushed into full release mode than a polished legacy move. Mike D’s voice still cuts through with that familiar snap, but the production keeps pulling the record away from any easy throwback lane.

For an artist whose name is permanently tied to one of hip-hop’s most influential groups, “Switch Up” feels deliberately unfussy: a sharp new solo entry, built on instinct, family energy, and a few noisy left turns.
