A-F-R-O delivers “A-F-R-O DILLA,” a seven-track EP honoring J Dilla and supporting the J Dilla / James Dewitt Yancey Foundation.

A-F-R-O puts his admiration for J Dilla front and center on “A-F-R-O DILLA,” a compact new EP built for heads who still care about pocket, breath control, and the messy beauty of a beat that does not sit perfectly straight. Across seven tracks, the Bellflower MC works inside Dilla’s swing instead of rapping over it like decoration, letting the loops pull at his cadence while he keeps the syllables tight and the energy loose.

The project moves quickly, but it has enough variation to avoid feeling like a simple exercise. “Man 101” and “Sound of Muzik” set the tone with short, sharp bursts, “Cali” brings in Elena Charis for a warmer change of pace; and the posse cut “Puddin’ in da Proof” stretches the format with 4-IZE, Young Hump, EKYM1536, Pulse Reaction, and MotionPlus. A-F-R-O mixed the EP himself, with EKYM1536 handling the master for DojiMoto Productions DMP.
