Nas & DJ Premier Reveal Artwork & Release Date For Joint Album “Light-Years”

Hip-hop’s longest-running “what if?” just got a release date.

Nas and DJ Premier have officially revealed the artwork and title for their long-teased collab album “Light-Years”, locking in December 12, 2025 as the day it finally lands via Mass Appeal. The project is confirmed as a full 15-track studio album, entirely produced by Premo.

The cover keeps things simple and iconic: a moody, dark-toned portrait of Nas and Premier draped in gold chains, framed by streaks of light that give the image its “Light-Years” feel. The photograph comes from Danny Hastings – the eye behind some of the most important ‘90s rap covers – with art direction handled in-house at Mass Appeal by Mike Lukowski. It’s a subtle nod to their roots without getting stuck in retro cosplay: two veterans in 2025, still very much present, with a glow that suggests they’ve got more to say.

This album has been hovering over hip-hop mythology since Nas first talked about doing a full project with Premier back in 2006, then mentioned again in interviews in the early 2010s as something that was “still in the works.” According to the album’s background notes, recording stretches from 2006 all the way to 2025, meaning Light-Years stitches together ideas from different eras of their partnership.

The real spark for this new wave was “Define My Name” in April 2024 – a single released on the 30th anniversary of “Illmatic” that doubled as both celebration and announcement that the joint album was officially “coming soon”. From there, Mass Appeal folded the project into its “Legend Has It…” campaign, a seven-album series spotlighting New York rap icons throughout 2025. “Light-Years” is set to close that run after new albums from Slick Rick, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Mobb Deep, Big L and De La Soul.

What to expect from “Light-Years”

Details on songs and guests are still mostly under wraps, but early listings confirm:

  • 15 tracks, all produced by DJ Premier
  • Released December 12, 2025 on Mass Appeal
  • Positioned as the final chapter of the “Legend Has It…” series
  • Built from both “vault” material and newly recorded sessions

Given their track record – “N.Y. State of Mind”, “Nas Is Like”, “Memory Lane”, “I Gave You Power”, “2nd Childhood” and more – expectations are sky-high. If “Light-Years” really does blend unreleased late-2000s sessions with present-day Nas, it’s shaping up less like a nostalgia piece and more like a time-capsule conversation between different versions of the same artist over Premier’s trademark chops.

Day One editions for the collectors

Physical releases are already up for pre-order via massappeal.com: a “Day Ones Edition” CD and a 2xLP vinyl run, including a super-limited Black Label edition with a metallic sticker signed by both Nas and Premier, capped at just 100 copies. All are slated to ship around the December 12 release date.

However you tap in – streaming at midnight or unsealing a Day One vinyl – “Light-Years” is finally real. Mark the date; this is one of those rare collab albums fans have been manifesting for almost twenty years, and the countdown has officially started.
